Lauryn Hill Pleads Guilty to Tax Evasion, Faces Three Years in Prison

AP

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Eight-time Grammy-winning singer Lauryn Hill has pleaded guilty in New Jersey to not paying her taxes.

Hill was charged this month with three counts of failing to file tax returns on more than $1.5 million earned from 2005 to 2007.

Hill appeared in U.S. District Court in Newark on Friday and admitted not filing taxes for all three years. She faces a maximum one-year sentence on each count.

The 37-year-old South Orange resident got her start with The Fugees and began her solo career in 1998 with the critically acclaimed album "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill."

She then largely disappeared from public view to raise her six children, five of whom she had with Rohan Marley, the son of famed reggae singer Bob Marley.

Yes, she should get at least three years for this. But I'll bet she gets very little and pretty much gets off the hook.

Obama will get her judge t give her a slap on the wrist...after all he helps blacks, hispanics but never a white person.
go to jail for 3 yrs...no house arrest and let her earn it all plus 100% penalty and interest and if not then double her sentence.
tax cheats of any color need to pay a higher penalty that us low white folks.

I am sure she didn't MEAN to do it. She probably thought that paying taxes was just for us little people....

She sounds like she's either a drug addict or mentally ill, thus "not responsible". Any normal person making huge money KNOWS the IRS is keeping a sharp eye on them, and when you have huge money, you make damn sure you pay your taxes and everything is on the up and up. She was "hiding" from...I dunno, aliens? G-Men?...but she found it in her to make albums and go on tour.

Why can't she be treated like Rangle or Geitner when they are supposed to set the example? She must not have the "Hook-Up"

I don't admire Ms. Hill's voice or lack of, but no one should get away with tax evasion.
