Big K.R.I.T., Killer Mike Celebrate Grandparents Day With Personal Memories -- Exclusive

Grandparents have a special place in the hearts of their family members. Many times they can be directly credited with stylistic influence, especially when it comes to an artist's signature sound. While many grannies may not understand the concept of hip-hop, the genre certainly tips its hat to the community elders from time to time.

Whenever a blues sample is used for a track or a jazzy hook is looped, it's likely that a producer or rapper was inspired by their early introduction to music, whether it happened on a fishing boat with grandpa or in the living room with grandma. Music is universal, but as an artist, if you can get your grandmother to dance to a new school rap song, you know you've got a winner.

In honor of Grandparents Day (Sept. 9), Big K.R.I.T. and Killer Mike spoke with The BoomBox about their respective relationships with their grandmothers and grandfathers. Here, they speak on their most cherished music memories surrounding the man and woman who helped influence their sound and spirit.
