"Bow Down" made its way to the Internet earlier today (March 17), satiating our appetite and perhaps giving us a clue as to the direction forthcoming material from King Bey may take.
The two-part tune sounds more like a teaser than a proper release, but if it's a sign of things to come then we're in for a radical turn of direction for Beyonce.
Over producer Hit-Boy's staccato snare rolls and swirling synth melody, she sings: "I know when you were little girls you dreamt of being in my world/ Don't forget it, don't forget it/ Respect that, and bow down bitches."
And perhaps looking to reclaim some of her own identity, makes takes mentions her husband, Jay-Z, singing: "I took some time to live my life, but don't think I'm just his little wife/ Don't get it twisted, get it twisted/ This my shit, bow down bitches.
The second half of "Bow Down" -- a chopped-and-screwed rap cut-- is dubbed "I Been On."
In an H-town drawl audible through the pitched-down vocals, Bey raps: "I been on, I been on, I been on/ Tell me who gon' take me off, take me off, take me off."
That's a damn good question.
All in all it's an interesting musical direction for Bey. Her last album, 4, was the most organic and soulful work of her career. But while that album's clever R&B grooves may have helped her hold on to an aging fan base that has been riding shotgun with her since her Destiny's Child days, it may have also missed its mark when it came to younger audiences.
Is "Bow Down/I Been On" Beyonce's attempt to win them back? It certainly sounds like it.
