Warner Bros.

Emcees may come in all shapes and sizes, but not too many seven-year-olds can rock a mic like Lil P-Nut.

While paying a visit to 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show,' the pint-sized artist immediately won over the crowd with a performance of his single 'You Might Be the One.' The kid-friendly lyrics -- "And you so smart, you always make good grades/ See, that's my type of lady, her parents she obey" -- elicited some enthusiastic cheering from the audience, and his stage presence and rap abilities were impossible to deny.

During the interview portion of the show, DeGeneres inquired about P-Nut's love life. He may only be seven, but the rapper proved his ability to charm fans by playing coy. "Hey, hey," he said, turning to the audience. "But don't tell Mom about it, you know how mamas get." ...
LL Cool J has worked with some of the biggest names in music throughout his career, but perhaps none bigger than the King of Pop himself. During an interview on 'Lopez Tonight,' LL waxed notalgic about his experience recording with Michael Jackson on a few songs that never ended up seeing the light of day.

"One time we was in the studio and I said, 'Mike, in the 'Smooth Criminal' [video], how'd you lean forward like that?'" he told host George Lopez, before adopting a faux-MJ voice. "We had a Swami come in ... he did a ritual and he leaned forward, and we all leaned forward together," the pop icon responded. "I was like, 'Really?' He was like, 'No, silly!'" ...

Another incident between the two got big laughs from the audience. "One time I said, 'Mike, I gotta pass gas, I gotta fart,'" LL admitted. "He said, 'Well go ahead then!'" If the story is to be believed, Michael even cracked up after LL obliged.

Though his stories were light-hearted, LL also paid his respect to the late entertainer. "Working with Michael was the most amazing part of my life. I respect him so much, love him so much."
With their album 'Too Cool to Care' set for release later this month, Los Angeles rappers New Boyz are ready to start celebrating -- and what better way than to do some traveling? Touring and promotion may have brought them around the world, but the guys still have a few spots they've yet to see. Thanks to some green screen magic, Legacy and Ben J got a chance to check a few more stops off their summer bucket list: Surfing in Hawaii, bikini-watching in Miami, and a detour to indulge Legacy's meerkat fascination. Have a look after the jump. ...
Gino DePinto, AOL

With a slew of young, up-and-coming rappers like Drake and Kid Cudi being hailed as hip-hop's "new class," Chicago native Paypa (aka Marcus Moody) is well aware that industry competition is fierce. "As a new artist... Everybody automatically compares you to the last hottest artist that was up before you," he told the Boombox staff during a recent visit to the New York office. "I get a lot of comparisons to Drake. I'd like to do a record with him just to show how much I don't sound like him."

Armed with an infectiously positive attitude and an irreverent sense of humor, Paypa is determined to show the rap world that he has his own unique style. "I'm comfortable in my own skin," he revealed. "A lot of people want to be what other people want them to be, they're afraid to be themselves. My music is very honest and very real. I'm talking about my everyday life." ...

Paypa's openness and everyday honesty has actually raised some eyebrows with more politically-correct listeners, thanks to his club-banging single with Game and Jim Jones, 'I Am Bitches.' The young rapper insists that the expression is local slang, not meant to be derogatory. "It's actually just lingo that was in my crew. They talk like that in Baltimore. It's just a new word for swagger," he explained. "My necklace, my waves is bitches. My whole personality is just bitches, baby! [laughs]"

Whatever you think of the hook, there's no denying Paypa's talent as an emcee, as he holds his own alongside the track's featured hip-hop powerhouses. The young rapper's love for music is palpable--a passion that was passed on from his parents.

"They listened to a lot of music. I had no choice but to listen to a lot of music," he shared. An interesting revelation given his parents' Navy background and tough-love discipline. "They were strict," continued Paypa. "Wake up in the morning, as soon as your feet hit the floor your bed has to be made, clean the room." It may not have been the type of household where you'd expect to see a child being forced to listen to Marvin Gaye and Al Green, but for Paypa it was life as usual. "You'd do that regularly, but then you go to your friend's house and you think, 'This is not regular.'"

Fortunately, Paypa's music-filled upbringing helped him get where he is today: touting a mixtape, 'Tunnel Vision,' and prepping a debut full-length album, 'Feel Good Music.' Paypa is an artist with big aspirations and the talent to back it up--be sure to keep an eye out.
Rolling Stone

Janet Jackson fielded some questions about her iconic Rolling Stone cover during an interview on BBC America's 'The Graham Norton Show.' The titular host made a reference to the image of a topless Jackson's breast being held by a pair of disembodied hands, adding that he had always wondered if she knew the person behind her. "Was that some really lucky photographer's assistant?" he joked.

Jackson, visually flustered by the question, played along with good humor, confirming that she did in fact know him (it was actually her then-husband Rene Elizondo Jr.). The other guests joined in as well, one quipping that he hoped the man had "good enough manners to warm his hands first."

Suburban Noize

Humboldt County natives and self-described marijuana activists Potluck come in full force on 'I Ain't Crazy,' a new track the duo recorded for their upcoming greatest hits album, 'Greatest Hits With Our Buds.' "We made this song about living on the edge of crazy," James '1 Ton' Kerri tells the Boombox. "Even though most of us are probably more on the crazy side, we still think "I ain't crazy." The group plays with this theme in their lyrics, using their typical sense of humor and some over-the-top violent imagery.

In the spirit of true underground hip-hop, Potluck embraced a diverse set of styles by recruiting D12 on the track. "When we recorded this song we were on tour with D12 and King Gordy," 1 Ton explained. "We got together on an off day at our studio in Humboldt County and hot boxed the whole spot. We cooked a little BBQ got some liquor and made it one big party."

"I would go to meetings and I would be doing this music as this kid who looks like he's half-Asian and black, his name is Miguel, but he sings. Like, who are you?" he told the Boombox staff during a recent visit to our New York office. "This was before the Latin market was even something people were paying attention to here in the States."

These days, the 23-year-old singer, songwriter and producer is finally getting the attention he deserves for his genre-spanning fusion of funk, hip-hop and electronica. Apart from his buzzworthy 'Mischief' mixtape, Miguel recently lent his skills to Usher's 'Raymond v. Raymond' album, was featured on Asher Roth's debut and co-wrote 'If U Leave' for Musiq and Mary J. Blige, which reached No. 1 on Billboard's Urban charts. Somehow, he's even found the time to work on his own debut album, 'All I Want Is You,' set for a late summer release on Jive. ...

For the up-and-coming artist, this new found success has been a long time in the making. A performer since kindergarten, it wasn't until Miguel's parents divorced -- understandably devastating for an 8-year-old -- that he had a true artistic awakening. "I remember [my father] sitting me down and telling me I had to be the man of the house. And at that point I kind of shut down," Miguel confessed. "We had just started doing poetry in school and I started writing poetry and the poetry became song."

For the next fifteen years, Miguel honed his songwriting chops, opting to take what he calls "the Ne-Yo route" as a means of breaking into the music business. Eventually, a highly personal song called 'Sure Thing' ("I wrote this record that no one was ever supposed to hear") landed in the hands of music mogul Mark Pitts, who was so impressed that he flew Miguel out for a meeting. After a miraculous, near-disaster performance ("I jumped up on this big round table...and the table isn't fastened to the floor but I was compensating for it and it looked so crazy") the label heads refused to let him leave without signing a deal.

Part of Miguel's appeal is the way he effortlessly combines his influences. "My father was into the Rolling Stones, Prince, James Brown, classic rock and hip hop," he told the Boombox. "And my mom was into the Temptations and Smokey Robinson." Interestingly, Miguel name dropped some of the biggest acts in indie rock when we asked who he's currently listening to. "I like LCD Soundsystem, Vampire Weekend, Grizzly Bear." That open-mindedness to different sounds comes through on the eclectic tracks he played for the Boombox staff. Someday, the young musician hopes to explore these more esoteric bands. "My next album, I want to bring in the music that I like to listen to, reintroducing people to stuff that I think is dope so they can appreciate the sound."

For now, be sure to keep an eye on this talented young performer as he prepares to take the industry by storm.
While the Suge Knights, Snoop Doggs and Puff Daddys of the world were verbally battling it out, another hip-hop scene was developing its own voice below the Mason-Dixon Line. In the documentary, 'New Flavors,' filmmakers Brian Bentley and Vernon Clarke take a look at the rise of Southern hip-hop and it's broad impact on American society.

Featuring interviews with Southern rappers like Akon, Chamillionaire, Luke and Trina, 'New Flavor' examines how the region's unique sound help shape the future of the genre. Beyond just music, the film looks at how Southern hip-hop has influenced the entire cultural, economic, political and social landscape of our country. The TwitPic in question was of a sign boasting the company's Black History Month-themed menu, which included fried chicken, collard greens and jalapeno cornbread, among other soul food items. Although the de facto 'Late Night' band leader posted only the message "Hmm HR?" alongside the photo, it immediately traveled across the blogosphere, sparking heated debate among writers and commenters. Some believed the menu was merely honoring black culture, while others felt the company was being insensitive to racial stereotypes. On many occasions, Keys has lent her voice to the Keep a Child Alive foundation, of which she is also a co-founder and Global Ambassador. The non-profit organization works on an issue close to the singer's heart -- providing medicine to families with HIV and AIDS in Africa.

Back in 2006, Keys traveled to the continent for a month-long journey that had a profound impact on her life. While visiting Uganda, Kenya and South Africa, she witnessed firsthand the stories of people infected with HIV who displayed immense bravery and resilience in the face of immeasurable hardships. Alicia's experience was captured for the documentary 'Alicia in Africa, Journey to the Motherland,' which allowed her to spread awareness about the need for lifesaving drugs and care for the people of Africa.

Refrain

That famous refrain you've heard a thousand times (at least) --"Bow wow wow, yippie yo, yippie yeah" -- is at the center of a legal battle involving George Clinton, his copyright owners, and if you can believe it, Shaquille O'Neal.

The chorus, originally from George Clinton's 1982 funk classic 'Atomic Dog,' has been sampled numerous times, most notably by Snoop Dogg for his 1992 hit 'Who Am I? (What's My Name?).' Recently, the song turned up again in the song 'D.O.G. in Me' by Public Announcement, a track which features a guest spot by none other than Shaquille O'Neal. ...

Bridgeport Music, the owners of many of Clinton's songs, have been pursuing infringement actions for years, and this recent case made its way to the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, which upheld a lower court decision that Public Announcement was in fact infringing on their copyright.

The court cited 'D.O.G. in Me''s use of the famous lyrics, as well as the "repetition of the word 'dog' in a low tone of voice at regular intervals and the sound of rhythmic panting" as the basis for their decision.

According to at least one source, Dr. Funkenstein himself won't be seeing any of the $89,000 awarded in the case, as he has been part of an ongoing battle with Bridgeport Music over disputed royalties.

Making this whole ordeal even more interesting is this bit of information regarding the song's origins, courtesy of the Court of Appeals:

"[Songwriter David Spradley] recorded the initial tracks in the studio and recalled that 'when George arrived he had been partying pretty heavily so he was, you know, feeling pretty good,' and was unsteady at the microphone. Spradley and Garry Shider 'got on either side of him. We just kind of kept him in front of the microphone' while Clinton recorded the vocal tracks that same night."
Oprah is being called out by a number of media outlets for her alleged double standard regarding domestic violence.

At the center of the controversy is Debra Winans, ex-wife of the 47-year old Grammy Award winning gospel and R&B singer BeBe Winans. In February, a story made headlines that BeBe had shoved Debra to the ground in front of their two kids (ages 10 and 13) after a verbal dispute regarding custody issues. A domestic charge violence against BeBe is pending until a court hearing in 2010. ...

Oprah has been very vocal about her zero-tolerance policy regarding domestic abuse following the highly publicized Chris Brown and Rihanna incident. On February 8, 2009, after a Grammy Awards pre-show party, the two singers had a physical altercation in a vehicle that left Rihanna bloodied and bruised. After the incident, Oprah's told 'Access Hollywood' that "Domestic violence is something that I wouldn't tolerate. Period," and subsequently banned Chris Brown from appearing on her show. Ironically, BeBe's arrest came only one day before Oprah aired a special on her show about domestic violence.

Just recently, Winfrey invited BeBe Winans on her show to host "Oprah's Karaoke Challenge," an 'American Idol' style competition to find the nation's best karaoke singer. Winans was brought on to promote his new reunion album with his sister CeCe Winans, 'Still.'

Many wonder if Winfrey was simply unaware of the charges against Winans. Others see it as a blantant double standard. TMZ recently spoke to Debra Winans, who said she is "hurt by Oprah's decision to have BeBe on the show." Winfrey has yet to issue a public response.
We've heard some strange mash-ups before, but this might be the craziest one yet. Pro skier Andrew Hathaway must have had some time off from the slopes because he's the mastermind behind this combination of Miley Cyrus' current hit 'Party in the USA' and the Notorious B.I.G. classic 'Party and Bulls---.' We never could have imagined hearing these two on the same track, but to be honest--it doesn't sound too bad! Unless you're an avid reader of Questlove's twitter, last night you probably missed what initially looked like a run-of-the-mill "here's what I did today" status update that actually linked to a lengthy personal confession by the Roots drummer.

Or was it? Though he's been known to get personal on his blogs in the past, the story he told on Sunday night was so outrageous that it has most people questioning its authenticity, especially considering references made to the upcoming Roots album, 'How I Got Over.' ...

According to the blog post, Quest's wife of 25 years (meaning that they married when he was 13) had an affair with Stevie Wonder. Though it contains few details, the seemingly genuine post describes Questlove's heartbreak over the damage Wonder has caused his family, previous attempts he's made to reach out to the legendary musician as well as ambiguous references to disrespectful statements made by Wonder about the incident.

The confusion really starts however at the end of the post, when Quest says, "This is a publicity stunt, I do have a record coming out in February called How I Got Over." Though this isn't the "just kidding" confession it may seem, as it's immediately followed by "I just need to close this chapter in my life and that means confronting our issues."

Other things to consider: the post contains links to a fake Stevie Wonder twitter account, none of this information (Questlove having a wife or child) appears on his Wikipedia page, Questlove referring to his "twisted fantasy," and the fact that since the story appeared, Questlove hasn't mentioned it in any subsequent tweets.

Most of the Twitter community seems to have decided the post was just for a laugh. If it's true, then Questlove has decided to go public with a very sad and painful personal story. If it's not, then this was a strange, unclear prank that is sure to at least get people talking.
The result was a combination of the two ideas, entitled 'Scene Not Heard' -- an examination of the relationship between women in Philly and their impact on hip-hop culture. Despite the City of Brotherly Love's reputation for legendary soul music, Philadelphia's hip-hop scene is often overlooked, despite the success of artists like Will Smith, the Roots and Eve. It was a beautiful night under the ivy at the terrace of the swanky hotel, and the D.C.-based MC got the crowd moving with previews from his upcoming studio album 'Attention: Deficit' as well as some fan favorites from his various mixtapes. Backed by a full band, Wale called out the Roots early in the set, thanking them for giving him his "first little alley oop" by featuring the then-unknown rapper on the track 'Rising Up.' The band then dove into said song, with Wale's sideman filling in (surprisingly well) for Chrisette Michele on the hook. ...

Other songs in the set included 'Sexy Lady,' 'Breakdown,' and 'W.A.L.E.D.A.N.C.E.,' which made a clever transition from a Justice sample to a rendition of Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit.' Before performing his new song 'Pretty Girl,' Wale quipped to the crowd about giving away one of the drummers sticks. "You know, an OG once told me, 'You got a stick, you give it a to a pretty girl.'"

The impeccably dressed Mark Ronson was present also, supporting his label signee by warming up the crowd with a DJ set leaning heavily on soul music from the '60s and '70s. In Carey's latest video for 'Obsession,' the vocal diva dresses in drag, sporting a hooded sweatshirt that is curiously similar to Slim Shady's signature style. The song's lyrics add to the speculation. An example: "Boy, why you so obsessed with me?/Boy I want to know/Lyin' that you're sexin me." She even alludes to drugs, a possible swipe at Slim's well-documented substance abuse. "It must be the weed. It must be the E," she sings. It's possible that Carey's song was fueled by a track off Eminem's latest album 'Relapse' where he raps, "Mariah, what ever happened to us, why did we have to break up?/Nick Cannon better back the f--- up/I'm not playing, I want her back, you punk." ...

Obama Family Attends Beyonce Concert in D.C.

Beyonce had some very special guests in attendance at her concert in Washington D.C. on Wednesday: First Lady Michelle Obama and her daughters Malia and Sasha. While the President was busy talking about healthcare for an ABC interview, his wife and tween girls were at the Verizon Center with some friends from Chicago and even a few White House staffers. It's by now publicly known that the Obama family are fans of Beyonce. The superstar singer performed for Barack and Michelle during their first dance on inauguration night, as well as other inauguration events in January. During the concert on Wednesday, Beyonce dedicated 'Single Ladies' to the young Obama girls, telling the crowd, "This is for Sasha and Malia - and all my single ladies!" Afterward, the First Lady thanked Beyonce personally for being such a positive role model. ...

"She told me she was very happy that her girls have someone like me to look up to," Beyonce told Vogue Magazine. "I'm like, 'Oh, my God.' You have to feel fortunate to be one of the people whom parents don't mind their children looking up to."

The President wasn't entirely absent from the concert. Apparently Beyonce has been touting a video montage at her shows that includes footage of Obama aping the famous "hand dance" from the 'Single Ladies' video. Thankfully, he opted not to wear the unitard.

The 25-year-old victim had reportedly gotten into an altercation with another concertgoer -- described as a 20-something Asian man wearing a blue baseball cap and jeans -- when the suspect allegedly threw something at his girlfriend. After chasing the suspect through the dense crowd, the man was stabbed, requiring emergency surgery at St. Michael's Hospital nearby. Police did not verify any witnesses at press time, and have yet to comment on the incident. Soulja Boy makes a quick cameo, as does legendary producer Quincy Jones, who adds to the absurdity by praising Aldrin as a hip-hop icon. Enjoy.

Ben Herson, the founder and director of Nomadic Wax -- a global hip-hop record label and production company, explores the role of hip-hop in African culture in the short film 'African Underground: Hip Hop in Senegal.' The piece is part of a longer film, 'Democracy in Dakar,' which focuses on music and politics during the country's 2007 presidential election campaign. Mixing interviews, freestyle and commentary from journalists and artists alike, 'Hip Hop in Senegal' educates on the relationship between Western and African hip-hop culture. One striking difference is the influence of Islam--for many MCs, it means no cursing and absolutely no elements of misogynism -- a clear break from some of the gangster stereotypes in American rap. The music is all conscious, with political and social change in mind, which is what inspired Herson to make the film. "Change is still in Senegal," he says. "And we hope that this film will help support the non-violent movement towards a more efficient democratic government." However, all hope is not lost. TV presenter Jonathon Ross was invited to the Detroit party but unable to attend, so he took to Twitter to pass the tickets along to two lucky fans. Aspiring singers and songwriters were invited to cover the R&B icon's single 'Everybody Knows' and upload their take on the tune to the Radio One contest channel. Well, it turns out Legend was so pleased with the results, he couldn't settle on a single winner. Instead, two runners-up will get to play their song at a John Legend concert, and the Grand Prize Winner will get an opening spot at a high profile John Legend gig, all expenses paid. Newcomer Porsche Smith took home the top spot with her stripped down version of 'Everybody Knows,' featuring the singer's soulful vocals over a jazzy guitar groove.

But back in 2004, teenagers were still considered the demographic least likely to head to the polls on election day. That's precisely why producer Gabriel Cheifetz tapped local Minnesota M.C. and hip-hop activist Chris Johnson (aka Shakademic) to reach out to the community via a politically-minded documentary, which resulted in 'Battleground Minnesota.' In the film, Shakademic puts a unique spin on his interviews, placing "G.O.P." bling on then-Senator Norm Coleman and even giving former Vice President Walter Mondale a lesson in record scratching. By helping bridge the gap between hip-hop and politics, Shakademic and his team of young filmmakers were able to use the language of their audience to spread a crucial message. As one interviewee says in the film, "You have the right to vote, so educate yourself and use it."

Contestants were asked to add lyrics to an incomplete T-Pain song, and the OurStage community chose Twank for the top 10, which went on to be handpicked by the R&B star himself. Though his stock may be quickly on the rise, it has already been a long road to success for the future rap superstar. Hailing from Houston, Texas, Twank started rapping at thirteen, cutting his teeth on local tours and performing at freestyle contests. ...

These days, armed with a charismatic vocal delivery and an impressive stage presence, Twank is raising eyebrows in the hip-hop world with his debut album, 'First Impressions,' which he mainly wrote and produced himself. And while most young rappers can only dream of performing with their idols, Twank has already shared stages with the Ying Yang Twins, 112 and Slim Thug (to name a few).

But don't expect the success to phase him. "I am not a money-driven rapper," Twank insists. His passion for music has already taken him this far--who knows what the future holds? Be sure to keep an eye out for this budding MC.
