With his hit single 'Replay' still topping the charts, Iyaz has been enjoying his newfound success. Recently, the singer -- discovered by Sean Kingston -- had the opportunity to go to his first VMAs, where he met the New Boyz, Katy Perry and more. But when the BoomBox asked Iyaz who he was most excited to meet that night, his response was a bit unexpected. "Green Day," Iyaz said. "They were standing right in front of me on the red carpet. I'm trying to get them on the album." The album Iyaz mentioned was his upcoming debut, scheduled for a 2010 release. Iyaz's island pop is vastly different from Green Day's alternative rock, but Iyaz remained confident in his plans. "It most definitely will happen," Iyaz insisted. "Most definitely will happen. I want to switch it up. I want them to go island, and I'm gonna go Green Day." We hope Billy Joe Armstrong and Co. are listening. What do you think? ...

Nigerian artist Nneka came a long way to take her first trip to New York City, but her recent visit was well worth the effort. In lieu of the upcoming release of a new record in February, the singer had the chance to make her live US debut, and was also invited to perform with the Roots. While she was in town, Nneka -- who has garnered comparisons to Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu, and already has a large following in Africa and Europe -- also stopped by the office to talk with, and play a few tunes for, the BoomBox. "New York is cold, but it's nice," Nneka told the BoomBox. "Nice people, very loud, very inspiring. The only thing that I don't like is that the sun does not come to you because of the skyscrapers ... I think that affects the brains and the minds of the people here. I think for those who live here, it's quite difficult having a connection to nature, which I think is actually very necessary." ...

Having grown up in Nigeria and attended university in Germany -- where her relationship with music developed -- Nneka's writings have a naturally global outlook. Balancing her music and her education wasn't the easiest task, but Nneka was ambitious enough to pull it off.

"I think I kind of intimidated professors. I'd come into class with my guitar, and they'd be like ... 'You need to decide what you want. Are you going to do music, or are you doing university?' I'm like, 'I have to pay my university. I have to do my music to pay.'"

Germany first gave Nneka the platform to express herself with music. It was there that she began to take her words and weave them in with soulful vocals and melodies, but it was also the place that allowed her to reconnect with her Nigerian heritage.

"I never knew what racism was before I went out of my country," Nneka said. "I never knew anything about my color until I came out of Nigeria and stepped into Germany. And then I'm like, 'Wow, I thought I was half white.' I became more African than ever. I read more books about Africa, I got to know more about my culture, I got myself involved in all sorts of movements. It's like they gave me my identity."

Nneka currently has overseas tour dates set, and her new album, 'Concrete Jungle,' will be available on Feb. 2.

With the help of Sean Kingston and one infectious single, newcomer Iyaz is adding momentum to the "island pop" genre. "It's a new movement," Iyaz told the BoomBox when he recently stopped by to preview his tracks and meet the staff. "We tryin' to make this so big that we got our own little spot on iTunes, you know." Iyaz -- his name given to him by his godfather and self-defined as "the one in charge, calling all the shots " -- was initially hit up by Kingston on MySpace, but ignored the messages in his inbox. "I mean, who would think Sean Kingston is hitting them?" Iyaz said in his defense. "I was like, 'This is not Sean Kingston.' So I didn't even give him the benefit of the doubt. I was like, 'Delete. Delete." ...

Soon after, Iyaz figured out Kingston was in fact for real when he flew in from the Virgin Islands and started working with him. Thanks to the catchy debut single, 'Replay,' things have been burning up for the singer ever since. The song feels fresh, but Iyaz cites Bob Marley as an inspiration to his own direction and career.

"He made his own lane, you know? He stuck to his lane [and it] made him the best at what he do ... So I'm trying to create this new lane, this island pop lane," Iyaz said of the mix of pop, R&B, reggae and island influences in his sound.

Holding strong at the top of iTunes and radio charts, the accessible, feel-good tune about a girl being "stuck on replay" in his head is speaking to listeners of all kinds.

"I was at a Chinese restaurant, and this three-year-old girl was singing the song, over and over, for like 45 minutes," recalled Iyaz. "We went outside, and now she's swinging on rear view mirrors, on street signs -- swinging, and singing the song. If a three-year-old can catch on to this song, I think that's probably why everybody else loves the song."

All of this dark imagery is right in tune with the song's suicide-hinting lyrics, "So just pull the trigger." When Kanye West first heard Mr Hudson's track 'Anyone But Him,' he told the driver to pull over and stop the music. '"About five seconds into the first verse," Hudson told the BoomBox, "he looks at me and he says, 'I'm gonna pay you the biggest compliment I can imagine. This is the kind of s--t I write." The Brit guested on Kanye's '808s & Heartbreak' and is signed to his label, and the rapper has predicted Hudson could be bigger than him. Hudson recently stopped by the BoomBox's New York headquarters to tell his story and play as many tracks as time allowed from his forthcoming LP 'Straight No Chaser.' Hudson put on some Kanye-inspired swagger and turned the speakers up to his tunes, which included 'Supernova' featuring Kanye, 'White Lies,' 'Everything is Broken' with Kid Cudi, 'Anyone But Him,' 'There Will Be Tears,' 'Instant Messenger' -- his personal favorite -- and 'Time.' ...

After what he calls his struggling days on the rock scene earlier in his career, Hudson fell into hip-hop. "I realized that all the truths and wisdoms of hip hop, I could actually apply to my stuff. I was much more motivated by that ... the discipline, the work approach and the pride."

But Hudson's new world with 'Ye didn't mesh too well with his old when the distance and change of pace strained his relationship with his girlfriend, who was still overseas. "The thing is, it kind of made us both realize we could live without each other. Even if you don't want to, the fact that you realize you can is horrible. What brought me joy was bringing her misery."

"I never meant to write a breakup album, but this one ended up being one," Hudson said of his record, which drops in October. The singer admitted to the BoomBox that his music "is kind of all I have in a way" -- and he's proud of it.

"This album, it's not just Kanye going, 'Hm, I think I'll find an English man," Hudson said. "I'm an artist, there's depth to the record, it's not just a couple of features and filler." We believe it.
