The Roots have announced the lineup for their fourth annual picnic which will take place at the festival pier in Philadelphia on June 4. As expected the lineup for the all-day event mixes genres with Nas and Wiz Khalifa joining the Roots as headliners and recent Grammy award winner Esperanza Spalding, Swedish foursome Little Dragon, Yelawolf, Mac Miller, psychedelic pop act Ariel Pink, D.C.-based indie rockers the Dismemberment Plan, Philly's own Man Man, Nicos Gun, and Questlove's sister Donn T will all take the stage.

Last year's event was a success with Vampire Weekend and Wu's finest Ghostface, Raekwon and Method Man headlining the event while the Clipse, Mayor Hawthorne and Nneka warmed up the crowd. DJ Jazzy Jeff and Skillz rocked the tent this year and it appears from the announcement that this year's DJ set will feature the Roots' own Black Thought and DJ J. Period. ...
It's been three-plus years since Lupe Fiasco's sophomore album 'The Cool,' which featured the hit single 'Superstar,' and since then, the rap star has seemingly avoided being a hip-hop superstar by threatening to retire [see: 'LupE.N.D.'] and eventually changing his mind and announcing 'We Are Lasers,' now simply 'Lasers.' But, it was made evident on Sunday (Feb. 27), that Lupe fans are willing to stick by him through the thick of it, whether it's his punk band Japanese Cartoon or his Lasers movement that almost didn't see the light of the day.

Last week, the Chi-town emcee announced he was taking over Brooklyn and putting on a free show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg, thanks to Walmart Soundcheck presented by AXE. Before taking over Williamsburg, Lupe would rock out with the Robert Glasper Experiment at New York's legendary Blue Note jazz club and to prove that laymen weren't the only ones who missed him, Kanye West and Mos Def jumped on the stage for a quick two-man cypher. ...

On Sunday, Lupe pulled up to the venue and was greeted with a line that was wrapped around the corner. Hardcore fans admitted to arriving at the venue at 2PM. It would be worth it. The rapper, backed by a full band, took the stage at 8:30PM (after spending over an hour greeting fans who'd been given the honor of meeting him before the show) and would rock out (literally) for 60 minutes. Lupe started things off with 'Shining Down' off 2007's 'The Cool' and set the tone for the evening. The rapper's hits would get an amped up, rock remix treatment including 'Kick Push' off his 2006 debut 'Food and Liquor,' 'Go Go Gadget Flow' off 'The Cool' and originally guitar-heavy tracks like 'Never Lies' would be even louder.

The rapper, donning a denim jacket with the words 'Laser Club' written on the back, army fatigue pants and Pro-Ked-like kicks, would bounce out of his jacket and eventually his white t-shirt while vivaciously rocking the crowd. Rarely standing still, Lupe treated his fans to some 'Lasers' tracks and never seemed to lose them as the crowd rapped along to 'State Run Radio,' 'Beautiful Lasers (2 Ways)' and eventually, the already crowned gold 'Lasers' single 'The Show Goes On.' Lupe wrapped things up with 'Daydreamin',' the smoothest track of the night, and continued to plug his upcoming album 'Lasers' as he thanked his fans, including Fiasco Friday protest leaders and Walmart and AXE heads.

Lupe's third, and hopefully not final, album 'Lasers' hits stores and online retailers on March 8. It's currently available for pre-order on Amazon and iTunes.
Eminem cleaned up at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards, beating out newcomers B.o.B and Drake, and vets the Roots and Jay-Z for Best Rap Album with his chart-topping release, 'Recovery.' Eminem's 'Relapse' album took home the Grammy for Best Rap Album last year, marking Em's second gramophone for Best Rap Album in two years. The rapper's sophomore album 'The Slim Shady LP' and third album 'The Marshall Mathers LP' grabbed back-to-back Best Rap Album awards. This will also mark the fifth time the Detroit-bred rapper has won the award for Best Rap Album.

"This is crazy," Em said when accepting the award. He then thanked his production team, Rihanna, Dr. Dre, his management, Interscope, and ended with a shout out to his hometown. "What up, Detroit!" he represented. "Stand up!" ...

Em's comeback album 'Relapse' was a shoe-in last year when it went toe-to-toe with a few underdogs, including Mos Def's 'Ecstatic,' Flo Rida's 'R.O.O.T.S.,' Q-Tip's 'The Renaissance' and Common's 'Universal Mind Control.' This time around Eminem had stiffer competition going up against tour mate Jay-Z's 'Blueprint 3.'

'Recovery' -- pegged as the sequel for Em's 2009's 'Relapse' album -- sold 741,000 copies in its first week and debuted on the charts at No. 1. The album spawned the Grammy-nominated hits 'Love the Way You Lie' and 'Not Afraid.'
As expected, super-producer Dr. Dre, Eminem and Rihanna teamed up for music's biggest night with performances of 'Love the Way You Lie,' and 'I Need a Doctor,' which is the second official single off Dre's upcoming, highly-anticipated 'Detox' album.'

Rihanna kicked things off in a ballgown (with flames shooting out the back) with Maroon 5's Adam Levine at the piano. Eminem eventually came onstage to rapturous applause and did not shy away from the song's explicit lyrics, with long silenced bleeps showing for it. Em then launched into 'I Need a Doctor,' featuring songwriter Skylar Grey. As expected, Dr. Dre joined Em and Grey onstage to rap up the performance. ...

Dr. Dre has kept a low profile in recent years, becoming somewhat of a hip-hop phantom, but the producer/rapper shocked a New York and Detroit crowd in September 2010 when he made appearances on stage with Em and Jay at the rappers' Home and Home concerts.

Dre's 'Detox' is rumored to have an April 2011 release date.

Eminem will likely take the stage a few more times this evening to accept a Grammy or two or 10. The rapper is up for 11 awards tonight, including Record of the Year for 'Love the Way You Lie' and Album of the Year for 'Recovery' and has already snagged awards for Best Rap Solo Performance for 'Not Afraid.'
When you think love songs, you probably don't think hip-hop, but au contraire! Hip-hop's had some romantic times in its past 30 years. Some of the love songs are from the usual emo suspects (LL Cool J, Drake), but then you have some unlikely lovers. Who would've predicted we'd see a gentle side to Wu-Tang Clan's mosh pit pro Method Man? And 50 Cent went from dodging bullets to asking '21 Questions.' Check out the list to see the rest of our picks for the best hip-hop love songs.

Break-ups are tough even when you're a wealthy music mogul and playboy. After a two-year romance with Fly Girl-turned-triple threat Jennifer Lopez, the couple went their separate ways. J. Lo would go on to have many public romances, but it took Diddy a while to get over the diva. Exhibit A: 2002's 'I Need a Girl.' Diddy didn't shy away from his inspiration behind the track when he rhymed, "I had a girl that would've died for me/Didn't 'preciate her so I made her cry for me/Every night she had tears in her eyes for me/Caught a case, shorty took the whole ride for me."

After Drake had some success as a buzzing actor-turned-rapper, his 'Best I Ever Had' hit radio stations across the US, launching his now-thriving career. The track's success was cemented when videos of the rapper performing it at clubs and college concerts hit the Net, showcasing girls (and guys) singing every word. Drake's ode to the ladies touched girls on campus, as well as esteemed artists like Mary J. Blige. The singer told The BoomBox that it was the line "Sweatpants, hair tied, chillin' with no make-up on/That's when you're the prettiest, I hope that you don't take it wrong" that sealed the deal for her.

A then-unknown Philly rapper by the name of Eve of Destruction (eventually just Eve) plays the role of the female in the relationship who dates an always on the road musician. The rap star then chimes in on Black Thought's second verse to tell her side of the story. The track went on to win a Grammy. The original ladies' man, Big Daddy Kane boasts about his luck with the opposite sex on this 1989 track, featured on the 'It's a Big Daddy Thing' LP. The record sampled the Mary Jane Girls' sexy 'All Night Long' and Keni Burke's 'Risin' to the Top' to create just the right groove needed for the track. The song acts as a general platform for Kane to flatter himself, but the rapper dedicates the third verse to the ladies with lyrics like, "Now, girls step up to this/One simple kiss, and it's over, Miss/Sold to nice dreamers high as the price seem/Girlfriend, you been scooped like ice cream."

From his advent, Ladies Love Cool James was all about making girls swoon. In 1987, the 19-year-old released his "rap ballad" 'I Need Love,' featured on his second album, 'Bigger and Deffer,' making it official that he was looking for "a girl who's as sweet as a dove." The song also boasts one of the most memorable opening lines: "When I'm alone in my room/Sometimes I stare at the wall/And in the back of my mind/I hear my conscience call." LL's ballad would also make him one of the first hip-hop sex symbols. Many have tried, but no one has released as many songs professing their love for the opposite sex. We've counted.

On Wednesday night, Raekwon mingled with media while previewing his latest project 'Shaolin Vs. Wu-Tang,' due everywhere on March 8. Originally positioned as Wu-Tang Clan's RZA-less followup to '8 Diagrams,' Raekwon, who takes credit for the name of the project, grabbed his title and ran with it. Good thing, too.

Listening to the 17 cuts (not including the bonus tracks) on the album, Rae does justice to the kung fu theme with soundbites from vintage martial art films and theatrical beats that segue songs titled 'Chop Chop Ninja,' 'Butter Knives' and 'The Scroll.' While Rae is the clear star, he isn't scared to share the stage with a laundry list of guests, including Nas, Rick Ross, Mobb Deep, Busta Rhymes, Jim Jones, Lloyd Banks, Raheem DeVaughn, Estelle, Black Thought and, as expected, Wu's Ghostface and Method Man. Ghost teams up with Rae on four tracks begging the question: When will we see a Chef and Ghost collaborative album? ...

As the room of bloggers and journalists chatted among themselves, took notes and tweeted, Rae stayed close to the speaker, eyes closed at times, and rapped his verses while bobbing his head to each track.

"We were tryna show y'all a little movie," Rae says of 'Shaolin Vs. Wu-Tang.' The emcee succeeded. The conceptual project seems to work best through Rae's eyes making it easy to forgive the Clan for not releasing this as a group effort.

There are many intimate moments shared in Beyonce's two-hour 'I Am ... World Tour' DVD -- from her handmade "10 Day-Z to Jay-Z" posters to rehearsals in tube socks and 5+ inch heels. But, in this exclusive clip, the diva gets up close and personal with her fans when she performs the Destiny's Child 2000 hit 'Say My Name' all across the world.

As amazing as it is to see the concertgoers' reaction to the 10-year-old track, what's even more incredible is how Beyonce embraces every city she visits and attempts to learn how to say "what's your name?" (or some variation of that) as she travels across the globe. Much like last year, fans can tune-in to ABC on Thanksgiving night (Nov. 25) at 9:30pm to see the 90-minute I Am ... World Tour special.

See what happens when a hardcore fan proves he shares something in common with the superstar. ...
Looks like the reality of T.I.'s impending prison sentence is setting in. Originally titled 'King Uncaged,' T.I.'s forthcoming album will now be dubbed 'No Mercy.' The change is appropriate considering he will in fact be "caged" when the project drops.

When we caught up with T.I. in August he was in good spirits and explained the difference between the mood on 2008's 'Paper Trail' versus the then-titled 'King Uncaged' album.

"'Paper Trail' was a dark, moody kind of album that told the story of a man going through transgressions and overcoming adversity. I think it told the story of resilience and how to move forward through your darkest hour to find your most celebrated moment," Tip told The BoomBox. ...

"I believe that 'King Uncaged' has more celebratory moments ... It doesn't have a dark cloud hanging over it," he continued, at the time. "Because [with] 'Paper Trail -- even it's brightest moment had a dark cloud hanging over because you knew that there was a moment of adversity coming soon behind and that was just the thought in the mind that even if times are good right now, even of all the successes there, I know that soon, somebody is going to have to go to prison. And you don't have that with 'King Uncaged.' It's unapologetic with no explanation. Just celebrate! Celebrate the moment, just being thankful to be here."

Fortunately, T.I. recorded 104-105 tracks for 'King Uncaged,' so adjusting the celebratory tone of the project to something more fitting might not be so difficult. The rapper has until the end of the week to turn himself in for an 11-month prison sentence for violating his probation. 'No Mercy' is set to hit stores and online retailers on Dec. 7.
Pop icon Prince held a press conference at Harlem's historical Apollo Theater this evening to announce his upcoming 'Welcome 2 America' tour, which Prince vaguely told the crowd will take kick off "on a purple night in December 2010." Prince added that he's bringing some friends along for the ride. Janelle Monae, Mint Condition, Esperanza Spalding and Cassandra Wilson will join the legend on the forthcoming jaunt.

BET's Vice President of Entertainment Stephen Hill introduced Prince and informed the crowd that as a lifelong fan of the singer, he was equally as excited for to hear the announcement. Hill ran down the list of dates and venues in which he'd seen Prince perform -- Apollo in 1994 was on his list.

"Bring your friends, bring your children and bring foot spray, because it's going to be funky," Prince told the crowd of media gathered in the theater. "Come early, come often. I have a lot of hits... no two shows will be the same," he added. ...

Prince also introduced a new track entitled 'Rich Friends,' a bluesy song that reportedly will be included on a deluxe edition of his recent European release in support of his overseas tour. During his groundbreaking three-decade plus run, the artist born Prince Rogers Nelson has sold over a 100 million records with such landmark releases as 'Dirty Mind,' '1999,' 'Purple Rain' and 'Sign O' The Time. In 2004,' Prince made a remarkable comeback as his Musicology tour became that year's highest grossing trek. Most recently, the Oscar-winning talent was named the seventh Greatest Artist of All-Time by VH1.

The significance of Prince making his announcement at the Apollo Theater appears to be due to his upcoming donation to the Harlem Children's Zone, a charter school in Harlem founded by social activist and educator Geoffrey Canada. Hill revealed that Prince will play a gold-plated Fender guitar during the tour and will auction it off, with proceeds benefiting the Children's Zone.
The recent pairing of John Legend and the Roots is a meeting of the minds that has born a cover album like no other. The singer-songwriter/pianist and hip-hop collective both share an appreciation for instrumentation, a vast knowledge of soul music and a history of never settling for less than the best.

An admitted music geek and crate digger, Roots drummer Questlove helped Legend select some of the most interesting, socially conscious and reflective songs -- from artists you may not have heard of, but will definitely know and love after hearing the reworked tunes -- for 'Wake Up!' Originally, Legend thought the album would be a supplement to 2008's 'Evolver' or an EP of a few songs from the jam sessions with the legendary Roots crew, but instead, two years later, the crooner and the crew had a slew of tracks and, ultimately a full-fledged album, not to mention memories of a recording experience they'll never forget. "I've never had an artist before tell me like, 'Yo, we can do better. Let's go re-record this stuff," Questlove says of the two-year recording process. We were lucky enough to witness the fruits of their labor during AOL's third Sessions taping with the Grammy award-winning singer and first with the Roots.

Watch John Legend and the Roots Perform in Our Studio ...

AOL: What was the inspiration behind 'Wake Up'?

Legend: The album 'Wake Up' was born back in 2008. If you flashback to that moment, we were in the middle of the election cycle. A lot of young people were getting involved in the campaign for Obama. A lot of conversations were being had about the future of the country and things we needed to do to make it right. You know, a lot of inspiration was in the air. I had just finished my album 'Evolver,' and it was about to come out in October of that year. But, I also wanted to do something that was a little more political and socially conscious, and of the moment that we were in politically and socially. So I reached out to The Roots and said, let's do some covers of a few songs, and make like a bonus disc, or an EP or maybe a digital download. So I reached out to them, they agreed to do it, and we started working on it, we recorded a few songs, and the more we got into it, we thought, you know, this is bigger than a few songs, this is bigger than just this moment, try to make a full album of this, you know, really get into a musical groove and let it play out fully. And so that's what we did. After I went on tour for 'Evolver,' then finished that whole album cycle, we came back in 2010 and started working on the album again. We finished it up this year, and now it's ready for everybody to hear.

Questlove: What he said.

AOL: Can you talk about the nostalgia involved with going back in time to select these songs?

Questlove: For the song selection, I spent about a week and some change, inside of my record room. I have a record library, of 70,000 plus records. And so, I just played a lot of records, made a copy of a few that I thought he'd dig. Then we made a list of 20 - 25 songs. We narrowed it down to the final selection. I wanted to avoid the usual cover album potholes. There's uber obvious songs that I thought would have destroyed the project, even though they would have fit into it. You know, like, it would have been easy to been like, we'll let's do, 'A Change is Going to Come,' or 'This is a Man's World' by James Brown, or you know, that type of thing. Or any Stevie Wonder songs. So I wanted to pick some songs that were in the middle, that had strong messages.

And one of the coolest things about hip-hop culture is that a lot of these songs have been used in well known hip-hop classics. So, even if you're not familiar with the original song, maybe as a hip-hop fan, you know from the hip-hop generation, you might be familiar with the music, or this loop, or, 'Oh, I heard that in A Tribe Called Quest song,' or 'I heard that in a Dr. Dre song,' that type of thing. That was probably our advantage to doing this record. The fact that, even if you weren't around during the Sixties and Seventies, you might have been around definitely in the Eighties and Nineties to hear these songs being sampled ... And they still have a strong potent message.

We're kinda hitting three demographics. People that were alive and around during that time period, that just like the music because it sounds old and soulful. People that lived through it, via the reprocessed generation of hip hop, and then John's demographic target audience, that sort of passed the classic hip hop stage between 2002 and 2007. We're hitting three demographics. You know, subject-wise I think we've hit a lot of areas, not just overtly political songs. Songs that just deal with what it means to be an American, how an American feels just from all angles. Like, we're just trying to hit all these birds with one stone.

AOL: What do you think you learned from each other during this process?

Legend: I learned some songs I Just didn't even know. He was able to dig into crates and really get some great material for us to, some of which I just really wasn't aware of like 'Hang on In There' and 'I Can't Write Left Handed.' Sometimes I would know the artist, but I wouldn't know some of the more off the beaten path records that they recorded. And so I think, one of the coolest things was just me learning more about the history of soul music, and some artists that have been overlooked, and some songs that have been overlooked, to some extent. And it was great really bringing those to life again; putting them out there for a new generation to hear. So I think that was one of the coolest things about doing this project.

Questlove: I'll say that if anything, this is definitely the first project that I've done, and which the artist that I'm collaborating with really wanted to bring, basically, the maximum performance out of the project. I kind of followed the rule that Prince always had, which was basically: make the song classic enough, and sort of middle ground enough, but just make it a great foundation, so that when you do it live, you can surpass it. One of the crazy advantages we had with making this a two year process, was that we were also doing a lot of local jam sessions shows. Of which, these songs sort of take a life on of their own. And it was almost to the [point] that they were absolutely more superior than the album versions. I've never had an artist before tell me like, 'Yo, we can do better. Let's go re-record this stuff.'

Now, we have such a challenge on our hands because the mind blowing version is now what the album is, and so we have to surpass it. He taught me a lot just about achieving the best performance, because I have a tendency to be very loose in my production.

Legend: And I think another thing that was cool, for both of us I think, neither of us have done a truly kind of live band arrangement for an entire album as well. Even though The Roots use a lot of live drums, and a lot of live instruments, neither of us have done the process of really being in the room together as a band, recording a full album. You know together, almost as it would be live. I've never done that, and Ahmir's never done that, and I think that was cool for both of us to kind of navigate through that. And like he said, playing a live show helped us come back and actually do better versions than we originally did. But that whole live interaction, that whole process, which is how people used to record albums all the time, is something that doesn't happen a lot now. And so it's kind of cool to bring that back. Because I think it gives it a sound, that other albums don't have.

Questlove: Yeah definitely a different energy.

AOL: Who can you credit with some of your early introductions to these inspirational artists?

Questlove: Strictly hip hop. You know, some of these records were definitely staples in my household. You know, Marvin Gaye's 'Wholy Holy,' Donnie Hathaway's 'Little Ghetto Boy;' compared to what was done to what was done with various artists, from Della Reese to Roberta Flack, to Eddy Harris, Les McCann. And then some of these records like our generation, from Earnie Hines, and 'Hard Times' by Baby Huey and the Babysitters, I knew because of -- well 'Hard Times' has been sampled so many times. I guess A Tribe Called Quest was the first to use it in the 'Can I Kick It' remix. And probably the best usage of it was Ghostface Killah in the Supreme Clientele record with Buck Fifty.

And pretty much Pete Rock and CL Smooth used 'Our Generation' by Earnie Hines in their 'Straighten it Out,' of which CL Smooth is also on the record doing a verse. Some of the songs I knew from -- he's a good friend of mine -- I guess I credit him with helping The Roots get a record deal. His name is Gilles Peterson. He's a DJ in London on Radio 1. He's basically I guess the new John Keal, the tastemakers, tastemaker. You know, the guy that still believes in digging for old great records and then playing them on the air, and then all the tastemakers find out what he played and then they claim it as their own. Like oh look at this guy I discovered. So, when he played me Hang on in There, like the last time I was in London, I thought it was just a Marvin Gaye outtake.

And he gave me the record, and that's -- I've always just loved that record for so long. I had it for ten years and played it for people. I think one of the great things about that song, is that's one of the rare songs in which you'll actually a hear an African American, discuss sort of the taboo subject of you know, I guess, what his version of being patriotic means. 'Cause it's not too often do you find African American's talking about patriotism, or being proud of their country. Especially with the experience that we've had with America. So that's always been on the shelf, and the music was awesome as well, so, yeah I guess you could say it's sort of a three way tie of my father, and hip hop history, and great tastemakers.

AOL: What are some issues that you talk about, that you don't think get enough media attention?

Legend: Well it was interesting, particularly with 'I Can't Write Left Handed,' you know, war is an interesting subject now. 'When I Can't Write Left Handed' was written, war was much more on the top of people's minds. Partly I think, because, the draft was in place, and because of that, there were more people that felt like they were at risk of having to go to Vietnam. Basically the whole country, unless you had the connections to get out of it in some way, or defer in some way. Basically the whole male population, was possibly gonna go to Vietnam. And so, I think that created a lot more angst, and a lot more anger, and a lot more rebellion in the youth community, because any of them could have been called to this war. So, it made them be even more skeptical, of you know, why are we there?

Why are we going over to kill these people that I have no idea what they've done against me or to harm my family, or to harm my country. Why am I going there? And so you know, there was that sentiment. And then when you look at the anti war movement now, I don't think it's ever, in the last ten to twenty years, even though we've been fighting someone almost through out that time, the anti war movement hasn't had that kind of you know, mass appeal, hasn't had that sort of resonance over a long period of time. I think part of it is because, unless you have military over there, unless you have family over there, you don't feel the war. You know, you could go about your business and kind of ignore that it's even happening.

Questlove: Yeah there's more distractions today than there was during the Vietnam period. I actually knew a human being who was in New York -- on Sept 11th, that had absolutely no clue what was going on until 7pm that night ... in New York City. That's just a minuscule example of how you can sort of put blinders on and not even be aware. The type of entertainment that's out, a lot of it is means for an escape ... to a harsh reality. So, this is a very risky record to make, because we're addressing a lot of the issues. A lot of the issues that, thus far, this generation has really, really turned a blind eye to.

John Legend and The Roots -- Behind the Sessions Video

Less than 12 hours after wrapping up an amazing -- and free -- show in Brooklyn, N.Y., John Legend and The Roots arrived at AOL's Manhattan studio bright and early in the AM to tape Sessions in support of their upcoming collaborative album 'Wake Up!'

While it was Legend's third time filming an AOL Sessions (fourth if you count his guest appearance during Kanye's first Sessions taping), this time around things would be a little different because the singer-songwriter/pianist would be sharing the stage with the legendary Roots crew. Legend and the crew performed the project's lead single 'Wake Up,' along with 'Hard Times,' 'Little Ghetto Boy' and the album's sole original track, 'Shine,' off the upcoming 'Waiting for Superman' soundtrack.

Check back in at AOL Music for the John Legend and The Roots Sessions, but first check out behind the scenes footage from the taping after the jump. ...
It was truly a historic night last night when Jay-Z and Eminem corralled approximately 52,000 excited fans into Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, N.Y. B.o.B and J. Cole got the crowd warmed up but most people were there for one thing only: to see Jay and Em. The two hip-hop giants could've performed the alphabet song and few would've removed their hands from the air.

During a night with expected surprises, Em created some of the biggest moments when he brought out New York's own 50 Cent, who then brought out his G-Unit crew. But it was Em's second surprise guest, Dr. Dre, who threw the crowd into a frenzy. Dre ran through 'Still D.R.E.' and 'Nuthin' But a 'G' Thang' while Em played hypeman and stood in for Snoop during his verse. "How many people want that f---in' 'Detox' album?" Em posed the question to the crowd as they roared in excitement. Dre exited the stage and Em closed out his set with 'Not Afraid' and returned again for 'Encore.' ...
Next up was New York native Hova, who's had some pretty big moments in New York. His 15-year career has seen him sell out Madison Square Garden in a day, hang with Oprah on a stoop in his Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood in Brooklyn, and put on a memorable 9/11 benefit concert eight years after the tragic event. With all that under his belt, Jay-Z added to the hip-hop history books last night by taking over the house that George [Steinbrenner] built. "One of the most incredible feelings in the world is to be from New York and to be in Yankee stadium tonight," Jay told the crowd.

Kanye West was Jay's first guest of the night. Kanye, straying away from Hov's "all black everything" look, bounced on the stage donning a red leather suit and animal print blouse for his verse on 'Run This Town.' To make this night even more memorable, Jay and Kanye paired up for a few "firsts." The pair performed the 'Power' remix and 'Monster,' the latter with help from Nicki Minaj, for the first time since Kanye began rolling out the epic tracks off his upcoming album.

Jay continued his run of guests. He shared the stage with Swizz Beatz on the energetic track 'On to the Next One' and brought up pal and Coldplay singer Chris Martin on piano for 'Heart of the City (Ain't No Love).' Martin also played his Coldplay hit 'Clocks' while Jigga rapped his 'Lost' remix verse over the piano riffs.
Drake was the next guest and the newcomer appeared to nervously soak up the moment as he launched into 'Miss Me' before performing 'Light Up' with Jay. The night wouldn't have been complete without an appearance from Jay's superstar wife Beyonce, who joined him for 'Young Forever.' The one noticeably absent celeb was Alicia Keys, who recently tied the knot with Swizz Beatz and is pregnant with her first child with the super-producer. Roc Nation's artist Bridget Kelly stood in for Keys as Jay closed out the show with 'Blueprint 3's New York anthem 'Empire State of Mind' followed by 'Thank You.'

"This is a historic night," Jay told the crowd at one point. "There will never be another night like this." MTV

Young Money femcee Nicki Minaj made her MTV Video Music Awards performance debut during the pre-show. Minaj -- dressed in a pink and purple spandex space suit and pink wig -- set things off with her hit single 'Your Love,' before jumping into a new track, 'Check It Out,' featuring Will.i.am. The Black Eyed Peas MC -- who likely produced Minaj's 'Check It Out' -- joined the diva on stage wearing all black including his face, which was painted black for the occasion.

Hopefully Minaj fans will get a chance to see the diva grab her first moonman. Miss Minaj will go toe-to-toe with Justin Bieber, Ke$ha, Jason Derulo and Broken Bells in the Best New Artist category. Minaj's debut 'Pink Friday' is set to hit stores and online retailers on November 23. ...
Not only is RZA the Wu-Tang Clan's production sage and resident chess master, but the rapper/actor is also a gamer. On October 19, RZA will live out every video game fanatic's dream when he becomes a playable character in Activision's DJ Hero 2.

Celebs love their festivals and Saturday's Rock the Bells concert was no exception. As swarms of hip-hop lovers descended on New York's Governor's Island by way of ferry, it became clear that even the famous wouldn't miss performances by RTB mainstays KRS-One, A Tribe Called Quest and the Wu-Tang Clan -- along with first-timer Snoop Dogg -- even if it meant traversing the New York Harbor.

Actor Michael Ealy -- whose movie 'Takers' reached the No. 1 spot in its opening weekend at the box office -- and Black Sheep's Dres shared a ferry with eager fans and walked the length of the island just in time to catch a piece of KRS-One before heading into the backstage area for Lauryn Hill's set. But it wasn't until Chris Rock, John Legend and Estelle positioned themselves side-stage that festival-goers realized just how many of the rich and famous were in attendance. However, the most paramount celeb sighting would come in the form of Jay-Z, Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, a very pregnant Alicia Keys and her hubby Swizz Beatz.

Hill was well aware of her famous admirers and eventually brought Blige, Bey, Keys, Beatz and stragler Chris Rock out on stage during a rendition of 'Fugee La.' "Where's Jay?" Hill said, searching for Jay backstage. "C'mon, man, this is New York." Jay saluted the crowd, followed by Legend and Fugees producer Jerry Wonder. ...

The celebs faded back into the background but noticeably rocked out to A Tribe Called Quest as Phife and Tip and ran through 1993's 'Midnight Marauders.' Beyonce and Mary J. mouthed the words to 'Sucka N-----' and shared in the excitement of 'We Can Get Down,' 'Keep It Rollin',' featuring Large Professor and 'Oh My God' with none other than Busta Rhymes, who hung out backstage for a solid six hours.

As Tribe cleared the stage, the power couples -- Jay and Bey, and Keys and Beatz -- made their exit as well, making room for Wu-Tang and the Wu's family and friends. Unlike recent years, all eight of the living members, and Ol' Dirty Bastard's son Boy Jones, took the stage to run through 'Enter the 36 Chambers' with some deviation. As expected, the "scrappy" Boy Jones paid tribute to his late father with a rendition of 'Shimmy Shimmy Ya.' Wu's set would not be complete without some crowd surfing courtesy of Method Man during 'Da Rockwilder.' The Clan wrapped up their set and thanked the New York crowd once Meth was safely placed back onto the stage.

Snoop, the night's headliner, would take the stage after 11PM with wife Shante sitting on the sidelines. The Doggfather had the most elaborate set of the day with the 'Doggystyle' cover projected on the screen, a card table full of Olde English 40 oz. and an unknown man in a dog suit. Snoop didn't skimp and performed the best of the best, interludes included, from his 1993 debut with a little help from Lady of Rage, Warren G, Tha Dogg Pound and RBX.
Diana Levine

The self-proclaimed King of the South is back, and The BoomBox caught up with T.I. as he prepped for his first major performance since he was released from prison earlier this year. Last week Tip kicked off AXE Music's 'One Night Only' series at New York's Capitale, and while the sound technicians, grips, gaffer, etc. were there to make sure the performance went off without a hitch, the many journalists and camera crews were undoubtedly present to capture any info the rapper could give about his incarceration and many upcoming projects. Acutely prepared for the barrage of questions coming his way from hungry media, T.I. strolled into the venue, took a spot and allowed the photogs to snap away.

After accommodating several photo requests, shaking hands of label reps and handlers, and figuring out his lunch plans, T.I. jumped right into explaining why he knows 'King Uncaged' stands up to any classic hip-hop album, specifically Tupac's post-prison 'All Eyez on Me.'

 ...
"The reason why we get ourselves up in the morning is to be in competition for the best of the best. I am no different. This is no different," Tip explained, clearing up some possible confusion over the comparison he made in Rolling Stone magazine. "I think my statement was somewhat taken out of context though. I said that this would be the biggest, most anticipated album after the release of an imprisoned artist since 'All Eyez on Me,' and for that reason it would probably be compared to 'All Eyez on Me.' I did not weigh in on that comparison in any way. Those are huge shoes to fill. It's a tall order and it implies a lot of pressure. But I welcome pressure."

And, welcoming pressure and challenges, T.I. will be releasing 'King Uncaged' on September 28, just six months after being released from a halfway house -- which was his home for three months after spending nine months in a federal correctional facility in Forrest City, Ark. In the meantime, Tip will star alongside Chris Brown, Idris Elba and Matt Dillon in the heist flick 'Takers,' which is set to hit theaters this Friday (August 27).
T.I., who was released from a halfway house in March, gave his first full performance at New York City's Capitale venue on Monday night (Aug. 16) -- as part of AXE Music's "One Night Only" concert series -- and the Atlanta-bred rapper did not disappoint. The BoomBox had the pleasure of chopping it up with the rapper prior to his show and checking out his hour-long sound-check, where it was clear that Tip wanted to put on the best show possible for his New York fans.

Fans piled in the hall and after an hour wait, Tip took the stage, setting things off with his signature "boxer entering the ring"-esque entrance. Backed by a five-piece band, T.I. would use up every inch of the stage as he bounced through 'I'm Back,' 'Top Back,' and 'Rubberband Man.' "I don't care where you're from ... the North, South, East, West. You gotta be real if you wanna ride with me," T.I. proclaimed before launching into 'Ride Wit Me' off his 2006 'King' album. ...

As expected, Tip brought some friends along. Cam'ron hit the stage, who then summoned Vado and the pair powered through 'Speak in Tongues.' Maino followed Cam and Vado, as did ATL emcee B.o.B., who rocked out with Tip the longest, including the numbers 'On Top of the World' and 'Bet I.' T.I. left the stage and let B.o.B. run through his hits 'Airplanes' and 'Nothin' on You,' which delighted the primarily female audience.

Just when the crowd thought they'd been properly entertained, Tip slowed things down a bit -- and stalled -- as Mary J. Blige made her way to the stage. MJB's presence threw the audience into a frenzy as Blige and T.I. performed the 2009 stand alone track 'Remember Me' -- which never made it onto the official 'Paper Trail' release -- before jumping into 'Good Love' off of Blige's recent 'Stronger With Each Tear.'

"T.I. killed his 16 bars," Blige professed before letting loose and dancing across the stage. After 90 minutes of multiple wardrobe changes, T.I. gave it one last go bringing Swizz Beatz on stage for Drake's 'Fancy' (sans Drake) and 'Swing Ya Rag' before wrapping things up with 'Whatever You Like,' his most successful song to date; the 'King Uncaged' single 'Got Your Back,' featuring Keri Hilson, and 'Live Your Life.'

According to TMZ, troubled rapper (to say the least) DMX is headed back to jail for a crime he committed several years ago. X was released early on July 6 after serving four months in an Arizona correctional facility. He was spotted in the studio shortly thereafter and was reportedly working on a comeback project, but it looks like the rapper could be headed back to the pen. This time, X will reportedly serve 90 days in jail for a 2002 reckless driving conviction.

In other DMX news, X's wife Tashera Simmons has publicly announced her split from the rapper and is shopping a reality series based on her newly found independence. The show, dubbed 'Tashera Simmons: Life After X,' will highlight her family's struggle dealing with the rapper's ongoing drug and legal issues, which, one can only assume, put a strain on their relationship. Simmons is also releasing a book entitled 'Tashera Simmons: Strength of a Woman.' ...

Lauryn Hill's 'Repercussions' Hits the 'Net

A never before released Lauryn Hill track hit the 'net Sunday and could be the fruits of a much anticipated comeback or a leftover track from previous studio sessions. Either way, it's always great to hear from the reclusive singer/rapper. In other Hill news, the singer will join Snoop Dogg, A Tribe Called Quest, the Wu-Tang Clan, Rakim, KRS-One, Slick Rick, Murs, 9th Wonder and many more, when she takes the stage at this year's Rock the Bells traveling festival, which kicks off August 21 in Los Angeles.

According to reports, Brown was taken into custody Wednesday evening (July 21) for allegedly violating a protective order issued by her neighbor Arlene Raymond back in 2008. Brown's manager has denied the charges, but this certainly isn't the first time the rapper has been in trouble with the law.

In 1997, Brown was ordered to complete 80 hours of community for spitting on two hotel employees in North Carolina. Then, in 2004, Brown -- real name Inga Marchand -- attacked a manicurist after disputing her bill and refusing to pay. Brown was placed on probation and forced to take anger management classes, but things took a turn for the worst (believe it or not) when the rapper was sentenced to a year in jail in 2007 for violating probation.

According to the New York Post, Brown was released on $50,000 bail for this recent legal drama. ...

Footage of Kanye Recording in Hawaii Leaks

Thanks to DJ Carnage and Carnage TV, Kanye fans can have a (very) brief glimpse at one of the super-producer/rapper's recording sessions in Hawaii. Some might wonder why this footage is so "rare" and/or special, but following the now infamous "I'mma let you finish" incident, footage of Kanye has been few and far between ... mostly because he's been holed up in the Hawaii studio. In the video, Kanye and his blond bald lady Amber Rose appear in front of the boards while he plays around with a beat. Kanye seems to be reworking a piece of the song 'Popular' from the musical 'Wicked.' We can't wait if to hear if this track actually makes it on his upcoming album 'Good Ass Job,' which is due in September (fingers crossed). Check out the footage after the jump.

Despite a threat of thunderstorms, the Roots third annual picnic remained dry for all those who descended onto Philadelphia's Festival Pier at Penn's Landing on Saturday, June 5. As usual, the Roots set it off and led the way for the afternoon acts. This year the Philadelphia-based band, VisitPhilly.com and the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation corralled some lesser known talent for those brave enough to bare the 90 degree heat, but by 6:30PM Jay Electronica took to the stage and got the crowd going with his buzz track 'Exhibit C.' Stones Throw Records' own Mayor Hawthorne added some soul to the event and Philly native DJ Jazzy Jeff, joined by Questlove and Mad Skillz, followed with a hip-hop lesson, of sorts. Jeff, with Quest on the drums (obviously) and Skillz acting as MC, gave context to many hip-hop classics as he bounced between sample to rap song-spinoff, i.e. DeBarge's 1983 hit 'Stay With Me' leading into the Notorious B.I.G.'s 'One More Chance' and Bobby Caldwell's 'Open Your Eyes' giving way to Common's 'The Light.'

No concert/festival would be complete without its delays, which came in the form of the Clipse taking the stage hours after their scheduled set. The BoomBox caught up with Malice and Pusha T during some the of the apparent confusion surrounding when and where they would perform. A visibly annoyed Pusha stood near the main stage with their DJ, road manager and security, while Malice made small talk about Twitter and Play Cloths. ...
But before the Virginia duo took to the tent, Wu-Tang's Raekwon, Ghostface and Method Man, took the stage after John Legend and tore it down for the many hip-hop heads in attendance. Rae, Ghost and Meth ran through classics like 'Protect Ya Neck' and 'Method Man' before jumping into 'New Wu.' The night wouldn't have been complete without a Method Man mosh pit moment, which was made priceless by the seemingly worried looks on Ghost and Raekwon's faces. A vocal Ghost told the crowd how much he loved Philly, noting that the city is home to the Delfonics, the late Teddy Pendergrass and many more. "I'm from New York, but if I wasn't from New York, I'd want to be from Philly." Ghost told the crowd as the Broad Street bully Beanie Sigel walked onstage to show the Wu members love.

With just 30 minutes before the fest was set to wrap up, Vampire Weekend made their way to the main stage to close out the event, while the Clipse finally took the stage in the tent and were forced to battle it out with the main stage's superior sound system. Concertgoers unable to decide if they were in the mood for hard-knocking hip-hop or indie afro-rock tunes made their way to the exits as the Clipse and Vampire Weekend simultaneously wrapped up the seven-hour event.
The tracklist appeared online this afternoon and one can only assume that this isn't the last of the leaks.

As expected the production credits and features on 'Thank Me Later' reel in hip-hop's elite. Among the guests are Drake's Young Money cohorts Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj, Kanye West (who produced Drake's latest hit 'Find Your Love'), Jay-Z, Young Jeezy, T.I., Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz. The majority (if not all) of Drake's collaborators come as no surprise and some of tracks [see: 'Light Up,' 'Fireworks' and 'Miss Me'] were announced during tour stops or interviews. According to reports/rumors, 'Miss Me' will be the third single. 'Thank Me Later' will be available online and in stores on June 15.

"Reggae music over the years has always been a voice for social awareness," Marley told The BoomBox. And Nas, when it comes to hip-hop, is no stranger to social awareness. The rapper, after all, professed that 'Hip Hop is Dead' in 2006 and fought (but lost) to name his last solo album the n-word. But Nas insists that he and Marley aren't trying to make a statement on 'Distant Relatives.'

"I don't think me and D thought we would change the world with the record," Nas added. " I think that during these times we're in, there's good music to go along with the times. You can put this record on when you're just chillin', or when you're trying to get inspired."

Kelly's 'Best of Both Worlds' album and tour, and Timbaland's 'Shock Value' projects], so few were surprised to hear that Nas and Damian Marley were teaming up for a collaborative album.

Last summer the pair -- who'd previously worked together on Marley's 2005 album 'Welcome to Jamrock' -- tested the waters and shared a set on the annual Rock the Bells traveling festival/tour. With RTB being familiar territory for Nas, fans got a chance to hear what this mash-up would sound like live. However, whether they enjoyed it or not, Nas and Marley had already begun writing and recording the album.

"Once we got started we couldn't stop. It started as an EP and we just said let's make it an album," Nas told The BoomBox.

Then came the title, 'Distant Relatives,' meant to signify the bond Nas and Marley believe we all share. "Me being American born, him Jamaican, our distant relatives are from Africa, along with everybody's. Everyone's homeland, the origin, where man started, as far as we know, is Africa," Nas explained. The rapper went on to note that the album's title also speaks to society's need to point out dissimilarities. "People point out differences and don't pay attention to our similarities as human beings."

Marley added that one of the greatest experiences of working on the album was "getting to know someone, and becoming friends with someone who you are a fan of."

Jay-Z joined 88-year-old comedic actress Betty White on Saturday Night Live last night (May 8) and together the pair helped snag the highest ratings for the show since November 1, 2008. White's first appearance on the 35-year-old sketch comedy show proved to be a success thanks to hilarious skits like the NPR "dusty muffin" dialogue and multiple guest appearances from the former funny ladies of SNL.

Not to be upstaged by the actress' golden moment, Jay-Z performed a mini-concert of sorts as he rocked out for more than 10 minutes, performing a medley of hits.Jay kicked things off with 'Public Service Announcement,' before moving into 'On to the Next One' and '99 Problems.' The Brooklyn native, joined by Roc Nation signee Bridget Kelly, wrapped up the set with his New York anthem 'Empire State of Mind.'

Jay returned for his second go round with Mr Hudson and performed 'Young Forever,' which Hov smoothly ended by shouting out the night's host. As Mr Hudson belted out the final "Forever young," Jay proclaimed that the performance is "dedicated to the most incredible Betty White." Can we all say "Awww!"

The production, based on the life of Nigerian musician-turned-activist Fela Kuti, received rave reviews when it opened at New York's Eugene O'Neill theater on November 23, 2009, after a brief run off-Broadway in 2008.

Directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Bill T. Jones, and bought to life from the book by Jones and Jim Lewis, 'Fela!' received a major financial boost when rapper-turned-entertainment mogul Jay-Z and the Smith power couple backed the project.

Along with Best Musical, 'Fela!' received nods for Best Book of Musical and its star, the "Everybody say yeah yeah" chanting Sahr Ngaujah, was nominated for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical. ...
While family and fans mourn the passing of legendary MC Guru, born Keith Elam, we reached out to Philadelphia-bred, DJ-turned-femcee Bahamadia -- a member of the Gang Starr Foundation -- for her reaction to her mentor's death.

"Keith provided me with an opportunity that with ALMIGHTY GOD'S mercy and grace literally changed my life," Bahamadia told The BoomBox. "I am fortunate to have been aligned with such an exceptionally talented/generous soul. Would like to extend my condolences to his family (biological & musical). Although his time in this world has expired, the positive impact of his life's work here will live on through the sustaining power of TRUTH forever." ...
According to a statement, Guru died of cancer-related causes on Monday. In February, the rapper, one half of '90s rap group Gang Starr, underwent surgery following a heart attack and struggled thereafter with reports of him falling in a coma before being listed as stable in early March.

The Boston born rapper, who eventually went on to rep for Brooklyn, formed the pioneering hip-hop duo in the mid-80s, teaming with DJ Premier in the late '80s. Gang Starr's debut album was 1989's 'No More Mr. Nice Guy,' and together Guru and Premier went on to release several successful albums, including the critically lauded 'Moment of Truth.' Guru stepped out on his own in 1993. His solo work includes four volumes of the Jazzmatazz series, and he later launched both Ill Kid Records and 7 Grand record labels.

Guru's longtime collaborator and friend MC Solar released a statement to express his grief at the lost of the great MC. "The world has lost one of the best MCs and hip-hop icons of all-time -- my loyal best friend, partner, and brother, Guru," Solaar wrote. "Guru has been battling cancer for well over a year and has lost his battle! This is a matter that Guru wanted private until he could beat it, but tragically, this did not happen. The cancer took him. Now the world has lost a great man and a true genius." ...
According to Solaar, while battling cancer in the hospital, Guru prepared a farewell letter to be read once he'd passed on.

"I, Guru, am writing this letter to my fans, friends and loved ones around the world," the letter begins. "I have had a long battle with cancer and have succumbed to the disease. I have suffered with this illness for over a year. I have exhausted all medical options.

"I have a non-profit organization called Each One Counts dedicated to carrying on my charitable work on behalf of abused and disadvantaged children from around the world and also to educate and research a cure for this terrible disease that took my life. I write this with tears in my eyes, not of sorrow but of joy for what a wonderful life I have enjoyed and how many great people I have had the pleasure of meeting.

"My loyal best friend, partner and brother, Solar, has been at my side through it all and has been made my health proxy by myself on all matters relating to myself. He has been with me by my side on my many hospital stays, operations, doctors visits and stayed with me at my home and cared for me when I could not care for myself. Solar and his family is my family and I love them dearly and I expect my family, friends, and fans to respect that, regardless to anybody's feelings on the matter. It is my wish that counts. This being said I am survived by the love of my life, my sun KC, who I trust will be looked after by Solar and his family as their own. Any awards or tributes should be accepted, organized approved by Solar on behalf [of] myself and my son until he is of age to except on his own."

The letter continues with Guru making it poignantly clear that even in death he'd like to separate himself from his estranged partner Premier, with whom the rapper has reportedly not spoken to in seven years.

"I do not wish my ex-DJ to have anything to do with my name likeness, events, tributes etc. connected in anyway to my situation including any use of my name or circumstance for any reason and I have instructed my lawyers to enforce this," wrote Guru. "I had nothing to do with him in life for over 7 years and want nothing to do with him in death. Solar has my life story and is well informed on my family situation, as well as the real reason for separating from my ex-DJ.

"As the sole founder of Gang Starr, I am very proud of what Gang Starr has meant to the music world and fans. I equally am proud of my 'Jazzmatazz' series and as the father of Hip-Hop/Jazz. I am most proud of my leadership and pioneering efforts on 'Jazzmatazz 4' for reinvigorating the Hip-Hop/Jazz genre in a time when music quality has reached an all time low. Solar and I have toured in places that I have never been before with Gang Starr or 'Jazzmatazz' and we gained a reputation for being the best on the planet at Hip-Hop/Jazz, as well as the biggest and most influential Hip-Hop/Jazz record with 'Jazzmatazz 4' of the decade to now.

"The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time. And we as a team were not afraid to push the envelope. To me this is what true artists do! As men of honor we stood tall in the face of small-mindedness, greed, and ignorance. As we fought for music and integrity at the cost of not earning millions and for this I will always be happy and proud, and would like to thank the million fans who have seen us perform over the years from all over the world. The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time and is my most creative and experimental to date. I hope that our music will receive the attention it deserves as it is some of the best work I have done and represents some of the best years of my life."
