"My grandparents listened to the blues. My grandfather listened to Chicago blues like Buddy Guy and B.B. King was my grandmother's favorite artist. She called all secular music 'the blues.'

There was never any blues played in our household on Sundays. It was just gospel on Sundays, but on Fridays [the kids] could listen to 'our' music at obnoxious levels. On Saturdays, we started cleaning at 5AM, and she'd play B.B. King all day. That was her Jay-Z, her Tupac, her Bon Jovi. She was a dedicated fan of his.

'Speak Lord' was one [of my records] that my grandmother loved. I wrote that just after my grandfather died in a boating accident. She connected to it because of the gospel aspect. It made her really happy.

My grandfather liked 'A.D.I.D.A.S.' because I mentioned borrowing some Viagara from him in it [laughs]. That was a pretty cool shout out for him."
