Back to Hip-Hop and R&B Albums: Grammy Wins vs. Losses
2003: Best Contemporary R&B Album
Amazon.com
Won: 'Ashanti,' Ashanti
Should've Won: 'Faithfully,' Faith Evans
How does Ashanti win a Grammy, but Diana Ross never gets to take one home? Puzzled? The people voting for the newly-minted Best Contemporary R&B Album Grammy in 2003 might have been too. Up against Brandy, Faith Evans, Meshell Ndegeocello and British duo Floetry, Ashanti likely won on the strength of her single 'Foolish,' but she really was no match for the stellar singers in her category. Faith was an undeniable bad girl on the vocal tip -- 'Faithfully' was her last album before she split from Bad Boy Records -- and it showed in her work. Songs like 'I Love You,' 'Burnin' Up' and 'You Gets No Love' proved her diva singing talent, which earned her a platinum-selling album. With missed opportunities to crown the rightful winner, it's no wonder the Best Contemporary R&B category doesn't exist anymore -- in 2012, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences cut it from the ceremony.
