Drake tried his hand at releasing yet another mixtape, 'So Far Gone.' The project was a major indication of how much mixtapes had developed. Many tapes up until that point had been artist-driven, containing original tracks by the featured artist but still bearing the name of a DJ as the host. 'So Far Gone' didn't just have the feel of an album -- it was promoted like one, in the sense that Drake and his small team were the only ones pushing it with no major DJ co-sign. 'So Far Gone' was literally artist-driven. The unorthodox mix of genres on the tape effectively filled a spot in the industry, as it became wildly successful in the underground hip-hop scene and was picked up by radio. Four months later, Drake was signed to Lil Wayne's Cash Money.
