"In my youth, I inherited my father's knack for making fun of people or belittling incompetence. It's part of the bravado and riffing that probably drew me to some rap music early on. However, whenever I was out of line or had lost my values and character, my mom used to say, 'Everybody is doing the best that they can.' It's so simple, but so emotionally powerful to me. Twenty years later, whenever I am impatient, lack compassion or just can't seem to connect with my fellow man, I remember that phrase.
