Dawn Richard is pleased with the successful woman she's become and a song like James Brown's "Say It Loud (I'm Black and I'm Proud)" is the perfect soundtrack for her storied career. To celebrate Black Music Month, the former Danity Kane and Diddy-Dirty Money member explains why the funky anthem's creation is a poignant moment in history.

"It was so controversial but it was one of the best records for black culture," Richard tells The BoomBox. "He decided to do a record for his people."

The singer, whose bold Armor On EP is currently out for mass consumption, goes on to describe the feeling her father had when he first heard the lyrics to the song.

She also expresses the importance of artists embracing themselves to be "proud to be who we are."
