Remy Ma Convicted of Assault

Grammy-nominated rapper Remy Ma was found guilty of first-degree assault today in New York state Supreme Court. The rap star's attorneys claimed the shooting was an accident during Monday's closing arguments, but the Manhattan jury didn't buy the story.

The rapper, whose real name is Reminisce Smith, turned herself in last July and was charged with attempted murder, which was later reduced to first-degree assault, in connection with a shooting in New York's Meatpacking District on July 14, 2007.

Smith stood accused of shooting her longtime friend Makeda Barnes-Joseph in the stomach for allegedly lifting $3,000 from her purse.

The rap star was stunned by the verdict and openly sobbed while being escorted out of the courtroom. She faces up to 25 years in prison.

Im black and I think you whites are crazy and stupid. you don't know what we go through. while you growing up in a nice home with a happy family we grow up in the projects. while your parents get paid too much money our parents usually get paid 6 or 7 dollards a hour so this don't have nothing to do with money. you all just hate to see a nigga like us to suceed in something. remember back in the 1800s blacks were slaves working hard for you while yall sat back and enjoyed yourselves. we blacks had to suffer not yall so back off with the racist comments about blacks

Some of the things ya'll saying are stupid. RAP is a form of music. It is a way of expressing ourselves just like rock or country. to be honest its not just the black people that shoot its all races. for example look at brittany spears shes crazy and on crack. just because remy ma shot someone doesn't mean that the blacks are no good and only deal with drugs, money, and guns.its life itself. im black and I love hip-hop/rap and a matter of fact I write raps and music for my brother and i haven't shot anyone nor used drugs.

WOW! THERE ARE HATERS EVERYWHERE! I ASSUME THOSE OF YOU WAITING FOR US TO KILL OURSELVES ARE MERELY A FRACTION OF THOSE HATERS WHO ARE EVIDENTLY JEALOUS. WHY? BECAUSE THE LAW SUCKS LIKE A WHITE GIRL, THEREFORE WE HANDLE OUR SITUATIONS OURSELVES. IT APPEARS TO ME THAT PEOPLE OF NO COLOR HATE WHAT THEY DONT UNDERSTAND AND FEAR WHAT THEY CANT CONQUER...US!

why does she have to be a black bitch or black scum. she has made a bad choice and hopefully can learn from it. I hope that we can all see the negative effects of hip hop and my hope and prayer is that blacks can come to love each other and put an end to the negative rap.

Some of the remarks submitted in response to the Rapper being convicted of shooting her friend are simply insensitive and just plain "racist." Statements like "...taking those people out of the jungle, and that "black bitch." I am sadden that you would print such comments! Regardless of her race, profession or dress, she is still an American and deserves to be treated by the same justice as everyone else. I am very disappointed in your organization for printing such offensive and racist language. Such lack of regard for another human being, and then blaming the entire black race for one person's actions, reminds me of the days of Jim Crowe. I think it is best that I cancel my subscription to a service that would print such language. Shame on you! Shame! Shame!
