Back in July, to the dismay of R&B lovers everywhere, The Dream announced via Twitter that his upcoming album, 'Love King,' would be his last studio release. "Being true to my word. I always answer the fans and followers. I am engaged and Love King "IS" going to be my LAST album," he wrote. In regards to why he was calling it quits on the solo album front, he stated that some unmentioned humans were trying to squash the dream. "It is going to be my last bcuz everybody is trying to "KILL THE DREAM!" I am the ONLY one that can end my career. And that's what I'm doing," he said.
To soften the blow, The Dream promised that he would continue to write, produce and appear on records with other artist, but no one guessed then, that the end of his career as a solo artist meant the beginning of his career as a record label executive. Yesterday -- once again, via his Twitter -- Dream announced his new position as Executive Vice President of Island Def Jam Records with a round of "thank you's."
"I wanna Thank everyone at Island Records/DefJam for their faith in me and making me Executive Vice President of Island Records," he wrote. "Thank you to my team..my manager Mark Stewart & my attorney Aaron Rosenberg for getting this 1st step of a goal accomplished. Thanks to Judy. Thank you to my partner Tricky Stewart and the RadioKilla & RedZone Staff. LA Reid, Karen Kwak, Steve Bartels, Joe Barino. Steve Gotlieb and Thank you, Universal Chairman, Doug Morris. After making a name for himself as a successful writer and producer, The Dream catapulted to fame for his work on Rihanna's hit single "Umbrella," then signed with Def Jam Records in 2007. He released his debut album 'Love Hate,' in December 2007, followed by 2009's 'Love vs. Money,' and continues to work on his final album, 'Love King,' slated for a late 2009 release. The Dream will replace Island Def Jam's former Executive VP, Chris Hicks, who has held the position since January 15, after the death of Shakir Stewart.
