Cormega Calls Drake a 'Spoiled Rich Kid'

Cormega and Drake

It's no secret that Drake has had it pretty easy thus far. Still with no official record to his name, he has a $2 million deal with Universal, stamps of approval from Lil Wayne, Kanye West and Jay-Z, and remains so hot he's pretty much omnipresent. Now's about the time for the haters to step up and provide their two cents, and our first contender is... [drum roll] Cormega.

"I can't f--- with Drake," said Mega in an interview with Street Disciplez Radio. "I like Drake. I like Drake as a young man trying to make money, but I can't take him serious."

Cormega's patronizing criticism makes some sense, considering his lyrics tell stories about harsh, impoverished inner-city conditions and relationships. He's also relatively old school at this point. Remember that he came up in Queensbridge and Nas shouted him out on 'Illmatic' (before their early Aughts beef). It's only logical that rappers that built careers on gritty realism are going to take issue with Drake's flimsy life narrative.

"He's rich," complained Mega. "He's rich man. I don't like when these spoiled rich kids just get into rap because it's something they can do but they pops got money and put 'em in the game and then they start rapping about something - a life they could never live... Go do something else. I mean, s---, if I could switch with you, I would be the rich dude, the rich goody good my whole life. N----- like us rap about s--- because we live it. These n----- use rap as a hobby."

Perhaps Cormega is simply unwilling to accept viewpoints from other classes or maybe he's pretty savvy at this point. Mega's new record, 'Born and Raised' drops October 20, so the timing of his Drake criticism is perfect to garner some extra attention for his own work. Considering the abysmal recent sales from 90s icons (Ghostface Killah, M.O.P. and Fat Joe to name a few), trying to take out one of the hottest in the game is never a bad idea when you have a new disc of your own to hype.

It's not even the fact that he's rich, or him rapping about having "made it." He was a successful child actor granted, but that doesn't mean because you are a successful actor that you are automatically going to be hot in the rap game. And he technically didn't get help, he was doing music while he was on degrassi, grinding for his shit. By the last 1 or 2 season of degrassi, he was in the studio till 6am and then call time at the degrassi was 6:30am, he was often 15minutes late. But yeah he was making money as an actor but it wasn't at all like the money child stars in the US were making, it was chump change compared to the stuff Miley Cyrus and all these other child "actors/actresses." He put out his mixtapes with his team/friends, and he developed his following without the need for publicity from a record company or a contract. He was in replacement girl with trey songz, without even being on a label, to get recognition like that is difficult and you can't even compare that to Soulja Boy's wack shit. Soulja Boy's dad had a recording studio, which is why soulja boy had the technology to put Crank that out. And when he founded "Stacks on deck entertainment" he was already signed to collipark and interscope, so he did have help. Drake may not have grew up in the hood but that doesnt mean he can't be a rapper, it's not his fault his mom provided and created a stable home for him.

Last time I checked, qualifications for being a rapper were essentially pure lyrical talent. And...well... "good" rapper is blessed with an above average vocabulary, creativity, and maybe a little "swagg". Thats whats wrong with the music industry today; just because the lyrics arent based around drugs, sex and violence, doesnt mean the song fails to meet the requirements of a rap song, and doesnt mean the artist deserves less respect. Drake may have been born rich, but that is irrevelant to the fact that he is an extremely talented lyricist who just doesnt fit the typical mold of a contemporary rapper.
I cant help but love Drake's music. Not everyone who likes rap can relate to Drive by's and hittin licks. Some of us enjoy deeper lyrics. Cormega needs to stop hating on Drakes success and worry about providing a life for his next generation so that they may grow up to be guarenteed successes like Drizzy.

it's not so much that's Drake's rich. I don't think anyone cares about that. It's that in his raps he claims to have "made it" with no help and from no where. When in fact he's a rich kid who's been in showbiz for ten years and has the means "make it". There a 1000 nicer rappers who have more talent, lyricism, swap, etc, etc. But they'll never be discovered. Not because of lack of effort, simply because they don't have the means, or connections. When clowns like Drake perpetrate this "I made it with no help." stuff everyone knows they lying and it just makes him wack as hell. Not to mention his skills are mediocre at best. But with competition like "Crank That Soldier Boy" and "Swagger Surf" he looks like Naz compared to them guys. Simple fact of the matter is dude is wack as hell.
