New York rap fans are a hard crowd to please. Just ask Southern rapper OJ Da Juiceman. To celebrate the city's annual CMJ Music Marathon, the Atlanta native took to the stage in the early hours of Thursday morning, only to be greeted by jeers rather than cheers. In a showcase featuring Big Apple dignitaries Raekwon, Jadakiss and Styles P, concertgoers were well aware of the Gucci Mane protege's forthcoming appearance that night. His name appeared prominently on the bill, which also included Atlanta cronies Donnis and Pill. Sponsored by NahRight.com and OnSmash.com, the event drew a crowd deeply rooted in the trenches of underground hip-hop. A setup for disaster as soon as OJ stood under the stage spotlight.
The rapper, who released 'The Otha Side of the Trap' last year, barely breezed through three songs before the critical crowd heckled and booed him from the stage. Though other ATL performers spit rhymes at the CMJ event, OJ was the only Southern act to reportedly receive a harsh welcoming.
While OJ Da Juiceman's debut album hit, 'Make Tha Trap Say Aye,' broke through to New York Radio, the crowd, there in part by hip-hop blogs, may not have cared (or heard) of it.
Several of OJ's newest records, 'Time Clock' and 'Burr Beer,' can be heard on the DJ Holiday-hosted 'Alaska in Atlanta' mixtape, released last month.
