Rapper Phife Dawg has struggled with diabetes since he was diagnosed with the illness back in 1990. He was put on dialysis in 2000, was hospitalized in 2002 and had a kidney transplant in 2008. Now the A Tribe Called Quest emcee is planning a big return. Having made a full recovery, the Queens native will be making his first public appearance since his surgery on Jan. 20, performing at Mind. Body. Soul., a diabetes benefit in NYC. Sharing the bill are rappers Ghostface, Talib Kweli, Jay Electronica and Consequence, as well as actor Michael Rapaport
Several organizations will be on hand taking donations towards the fight against diabetes, and giving out information about the illness.
