KRS-One Leads Boycott Against National Hip-Hop Museum

KRS-OneAlways one to battle, KRS-One took to the podium at an April 8 launch event for the National Museum of Hip-Hop in the Bronx and shocked audiences with a message to boycott the museum because it did not pay proper respect to hip-hop's forefathers.

"The reason that it's not going to happen is because Afrika Bambaataa has said this event is illegitimate and should not happen," said an angry KRS-One. "None of the pioneers are in support of this event. None of them will be here tonight. I am here on behalf of the temple of hip-hop as an observer. We are observing."

KRS-One was apparently included in the initial planning and organization stages of the museum, but has spoken out against recent changes in direction. He claims that him and Bambaataa have been working on an accurate, celebratory museum for over two decades, but the people in charge didn't respect hip-hop history enough.
"In closing, what you are getting, actually, is a real dose of hip-hop's culture," he continued. "Here is what we are dealing with, ladies and gentleman. We have been trying to start a hip-hop museum for over 20 years. In fact, it was Afrika Bambaataa that came up with the idea. However, most of the people who have been behind the hip-hop museum idea seem to always create groups without addressing the pioneers themselves."

LovelyRos... you are very adamant and very upset by people's opinions. For you to use profanity when I am merely stating my opinion is very uncalled for. Whether you agree with what others say, it is not up to you convince others to believe in what you believe in. If you support the hip hop museum, than so be it, that is your opinion but you can't make people see things the way you do. I personally am not for it. I am black and I am very proud to be black. I am young and personally do not like the rap music these days. What I like and listen to is what I want to listen to and what you like is what you like and who am I to tell you otherwise. We all are on here voicing our opinions and we all will not agree with one another but at the end of the day no one's opinion is greater than another.

Thank you for the comment. It's sad to see that again what was suppose to be a progressive discussion turn into just a trash fest and "race wars" prt III. You know it's very easy to make comment filled with preconceived bias and unnecessary hate, but truly hard to take a look at any issue from an objective perspective and develop a well thought out argument. And that's for any situation. But for this we clearly see some of the shortcomings of humanity all over again. What makes this worse is most of those commenting on how hip-hop is crap and 'apes' listen to it and all just are just posting to make people mad. Notice how they avoid replying to people that could easily debate them and go straight for the one making mindless attacks right back. I even wonder of those who are leaving vile comments have even listen to any hip hop music. If not then please take Illmatic, strip the music out, listen to the words and tell me do you think this music is still for ignorant people? But then that would be to hard wouldn't it?

Again this is the kind of respect African Americans get in pretty much everything they do. Need I remind you all that rock n roll did originate from 'ape' music too. But I guess that really doesn't matter. Anyways KRS obviously made the point about this being about money and I think the key to his point was when he said "we've seen this happen time and time again." Honestly I think museums really shouldn't be about profit at all as they are suppose to be about preserving and presenting history. But I think in this case KRS argument may just be from the feeling that a lot of the original rappers have been getting screwed out of money that they deserve to have a piece of. It all really depends on the real intention of this museum, or series of museums as KRS may have alluded to, as to whether he has grounds for a money argument. Now if this is about having input, then there's a completely different story.

Sean is incorrect, unfortunately. One can end a sentence with an adverb. Sincerely, English Professor.

Museums detail history. YOu can not detail the history of rap without the forefathers of rap. It would be like having a US HIstory book that STARTS at The Spanish American War and ignores the formation of the country.

I don't have anything against rap but I am surprised that they decided to have a hip-hop museum. I mean people that rap it is a form of expression and some of it is creative but the rap these days is just garbage. It's like your just bopping to the beat but the lyrics make no sense. I just don't think its music that is worth putting in a museum. Now maybe like the first rappers can go in there but these other rappers the things they rhyme about from the bling to disrespecting women that should not be honored in a museum.

SH#T head, if they can have a rock-n-roll hall of fame, they can have a rap/hip-hop hall of fame. Talk about insifgnificant music--ROCK leads the way. It's more insignificant than COUNTRY. And let's not leave out PUNK - OMG - LOL!

These guys are just pissed they didn't MAKE MILLIONS / BILLIONS on the music they CREATED. That happens all the time, GUYS! The originators die POOR and the youngsters make millions. Get over it! Most of the people in the baseball hall of fame never made serious bucks, but they paved the way for everyone NOW to make 10 million a year as a mediocre player. Same goes for mediocre rap.
