Erykah Badu Says She 'Understands Infidelity'

In a recent interview with UK newspaper the Telegraph, controversial singer Erykah Badu said she understands why men cheat, and that infidelity is "not a deal-breaker" for her, in a relationship.

"We're all born sexual beings," Badu told the magazine. "I myself am not someone with a very high libido. I don't require sex for happiness – I need companionship. I need a partner I can depend on, that I can love and grow with. But I do understand the nature of these men I've been with, and men in general. They have a need to chase."
The singer continued to explain that she has "had a boyfriend non-stop since I was five," and that she considers herself a matriarch. "I live in a queendom, ruled by a womb-iverse," she told the Telegraph.

The 39-year-old singer has had children with several different rappers, including Andre 3000, D.O.C. and Jay Electronica, yet remains one of the most respected female artists in the hip hop community. She continued to say that she doesn't completely tolerate cheating, but she seeks to understand it.

"I'm having to recondition my brain, 'cos the first thing I got was a doll named Barbie and she had Ken and that's how it was supposed to be. You're conditioned to think that way, and when it doesn't happen you feel you're a failure. What we have in common, me and the brothers I've known, is that we are all trying to evolve ... We talk a lot about things that men want. Because I want them to be happy and the more I see how the male of the species behaves, the more I understand, and the less I blame him."

Erykah Badu's new album 'New Amerykah, Part 2: Return of the Ankh' is in stores now.

Honestly I think that's a cop out, anyone can control what they do. Men cheat because they want to, same with women. Mistakes happen because you let them. Oh baby I'm sorry it was a mistake is an excuse, because you had the power to say the word "No". Or even walk away, some men say it's hard to do so, I believe it, women make it hard on men. Especially the ones that think they're at the beach when they're at the mall. We all need self-control.

My only issue with what she is saying is that she doesn't specifically mention that it's okay for women to cheat as well. I know she says humans in general are sexual beings and kind of makes it sound like "oh, these men can't help themselves," which is silly, because if you want to cheat, you can always just break up with the person beforehand, and it lets a lot of shitty dudes off the hook. If people are going to cheat, then I think it should be made clear that it's okay for both sexes to do so. I've taken many courses on primate evolution and human nature and psychology and I learned the theory that men are "designed for the chase" but what I have also learned is that that theory is often oversimplified by people to use as an excuse for shitty actions, and has a lot of missing pieces. In our closest living relatives, the bonobos, the females run the show and EVERYONE is promiscuous with everyone else--not just the males running off "spreading their seed". The female leaders in these troops of bonobos use sex as a social glue to ease tensions, strengthen bonds, just plain sexual pleasure, and, of course, for mating. It would probably make sense for us to be the same in our species, but for some reason we do have a semi-monogamous attitude instilled in us, but it's very likely that's a purely cultural thing, but who knows. It actually makes reproductive logic to have a promiscuous "phase" in order to look for the best possible "mate," then once your "mate" has been found and you have found reproductive success with said mate, you stick around monogamously to raise the child whether you are the male or female. The reason for this is that human beings are very high maintenance and take a long time to raise and to ensure not just reproductive success but the extended survival of offspring, the male would have to stick around to raise his child; any time taken away by the male or female to go spend time with another male or female would be taking away from the original male or female's chances at reproductive success, so cheating may not really make as much sense as we may think it does, evolutionarily. The whole "spreading my seed" thing is half truth and half b.s. Quite honestly, if you are going to use that reasoning for a cheating lifestyle, since most men who "spread their seed" don't actually desire reproductive success, then you have to accept that women are going to use men for their resources and be okay with that as well, because evolutionarily speaking, that is a female behavior that ensures the female's own "reproductive success," so anyone who trashes women who sleep with Hugh Heffner or are "gold diggers" are actually completely in the wrong if they are going to use the "spreading the seed" theory. I have also learned that sex is just not as dichotomous as we think it is, so anything a male is "programmed" to do, any given female may be "programmed" to do as well based on that specific individual. I for one was not born the kind of girl who will fall to her knees with gratitude if a boy buys me a nice shiny rock. Many of my male friends were not born the type of guys who want to beat the shit out of other guys or play sports. Dichotomous sexuality is just a nice way of keeping things neat and compartmentalized for our little brains to understand. If you look around there are just too many transsexual, bisexual, homosexual, transgendered, hermaphroditic, asexual, and just plain confused human beings on this planet for there to really, truly only be two sexes, each with individual rules and behaviors, not to mention that we all start out the same sexless thing in the womb, and that women all actually have small, compact, penis-like structures inside them (the clitoris, check out this video if you are unaware of this and want to see how it works: http://www.ed-sim.com/en/home?r=clitoral_vascularization ) that become erect and engorged when they are turned on, that everyone has both estrogen and testosterone, and that both men and women goes through menopause. Many cultures throughout history have had a "third sex," which, if we must label them, makes a lot more sense than just male vs. female. I'm sure that there are traits and behaviors which occur more in a person who has just "girl parts" vs. a person who has just "guy parts," but I think that all in all before you let anyone, male or female, off the hook for cheating or other crappy "evolutionary behavior," you should very carefully examine the situation, yourself, and definitely the individual at fault.

I don't normally bother reading such a long post but that was a good read and well put. I agree completely--people are way too quick to overemphasize the strength of male urges and to let "shitty dudes" off the hook.

I hate listening to people make excuses when men act like low quality human beings. There is something to the genetic predisposition for men to want to procreate as often as possible and for women to seek 'security' (a nice way of saying money) but urges are not the whole matter. It is probably partly my maleness that literally makes me want to kill you if you do something assinine on the road but we all understand that, that is not is not okay for civilized people. When a person commits to another that further "lames" any potential excuses because a promise is a promise. I think people find it easier to make excuses for men than to hold them to a standard, or than to insist that they (women) deserve to be treated better.

What a freak. For her to say that she "Understands" men that cheat is like she's giving every man she's in a relationship with the "green light" to cheat on her! The most important thing to remember here is that infidelity in either male or females can lead to unwanted sexually transmitted disease. Not only can ruin the self esteem of the partner that has been cheated on, but think of the effect that it will have on the children that involved in the conflict.

TDuke hit it on the nail, and to add previous to the inception of the Christian religion, and to some extent in tribal conditions today the rule of thumb is to procreate the tribe/race. We as "intellegent" beings have injected morays and rules into the mix to placate variuos religions and beliefs. If there were a global holocaust of some type and humanity was reduced to a small population. Males of all tribes would be mating with every fertile female on the planet as a matter of procreation and natural selection.

I was married to a man who was highly educated/somewhat handsome for almost twenty years. We had a daughter and I put him thru med school, as well. He cheated on me. He got fired from his job and lost his rep in a prestigious university position for messing around with a colleague and then had to pay me almost half a million dollars. Think about it, gentlemen. Is it really worth it to cheat with some ho who could turn out to be worse than what you had originally? I think not.
