You may recall the backlash from John Mayer's controversial comments about black women in the February issue of Playboy magazine, and it seems that we might have a similar situation on our hands. In a Vibe blog published on Monday (June 7), rapper Slim Thug decided to vent freely on the pitfalls of dating black women, but his words have caused quite an uproar.Although Slim was trying to get at the point that there should be "a fair exchange in a relationship," most of his comments have rubbed the black community the wrong way. "Most single Black women feel like they don't want to settle for less. Their standards are too high right now," Slim began. "They have to understand that successful Black men are kind of extinct. We're important. It's hard to find us, so Black women have to bow down and let it be known that they gotta start working hard."
He continued: "It's hard to trust a Black woman [sometimes] because a lot of Black women's mind frame is that the man gotta do everything for her -- he gotta pay for this, he gotta pay for that, and if it ain't about then a lot of them ain't f------ with him," Slim said. The rapper then explained that he had hit the jackpot with his mixed girlfriend. "My girl is Black and White. I guess the half White in her is where she still cooks and do all the s--- that I say, so we make it. She just takes care of me and I like that. She don't be begging and I don't gotta buy her all this crazy a-- s---."
Since the blog was published, fans, bloggers and even intellectuals have been prompted to weigh in on Slim's outburst. But the Texas rapper doesn't seem to be too disturbed by all the backlash. He phoned into a Texas radio station on Tuesday (June 8) where he addressed the blog entry, saying, "I said a few things that I guess offended a lot of black women or whatever, so they mad. But a blog is opinion though, so I don't understand why they mad at me." Slim tried to emphasize that the interview started off in a "joking mood," but concluded that the humor didn't shine through in the text.
