Mos Def Encourages Science Education

Mos Def wants to send students off into space. The Brooklyn emcee is partnering with NASA and singer Goapele to help promote science education at the I.S.I.S. Science & Culture Festival in Oakland, Calif. this weekend. Mos will appear alongside astronaut Leland Marvin and conduct a holographic presentation in the Cabot Space and Science Center to educate youth on pursuing higher education in the field of science and technology.

"Leland Melvin and myself are working with the Instituting Science in Schools Program, sponsored by NASA," Mos said in a statement. "I'm just here to give the young people some inspiration, some positive encouragement and some good information about science, technology, creativity and discovery and how to use math, science and information to make a positive impact and changes on the world around us."

The free event which takes place Sunday (Sept. 5) is open to the public and will be held from 11-5 PM. Watch Mos Def talk about the project in the video below.

It's true that NASA is just a bunch of paper-pushers these days. It's also true that the majority of rap is crap. (Sturgeon's Law: 90% of EVERYTHING is crap.) But if you're going to get all snitty about someone using whatever might work to get kids to pay attention in class, then just go back to watching your soap operas.

I don't like rap, so I don't listen to it. But I have no right to tell anyone else what to listen to, except that if you listen to reichwingnut "We want America to fail because of the black guy in office!" radio or TV, you are too stupid to be allowed to have an opinion.

I despise NASA's current crop of management yes-boys, who all but do a conga line with each other's noses in each other's rear ends. But if it takes a picture of Earth from the moon to get one kid's interest in science, I'll join the conga line.

More power to whoever this guy is. And to any kids who stick through physics 101 because of him.

I believe he was referring to the fact that NASA's most highly funded program is their Muslim outreach program, not to any hatred of Muslims. And just so you know, suzana12345, Americans tend to live in America, and thanks for disregarding our cultural, religious, socio-cultural and geographical differences.

First I would like to say, "Hello to all, especially the killjoys" It is way too often that when we see a face or title we then decide to discount their opinion or efforts. I'm sure most of us will say that there isn't any prejudice behind their remarks, but the harsh reality is that our ignorance promotes many to be plain stupid. No offense to those of you who put thought in the endless possibilities of what this endeavor could bring about. You know there is a chance that there may be more than one race or relgion that could benefit from this project. Okay lesson 1- let's try putting your own name or maybe someone you admire in place of a well known person when you read another article about a good deed, 2- then bash yourself, oh lets not forget to let someone else get in on the bashing. Then you decide what does that have to do with your efforts. Oh and to all of the scholars out there, can someone proof read my post? Lol, u Guys R Crazy ;-D

I am sorry for this one no racial harm intended, just humor, The reason there were not that many black astronauts was because 1, the Jig is up.....and they just cant get use to saying yes NASA , no Nasa. just some old Richard pryor jokes .....

I have met Mos twice. Once after the Rocksteady Reunion and another after a show at BB Kings in NYC. He is the nicest most caring entertainer in the world. Other entertainers arent sincere about thier endeavors like Mos. Great man, a credit to his race....the human race!
