Michael Jackson Estate Bans 'Moonwalker' at L.A. Theater

The Michael Jackson estate has officially shut down a Los Angeles movie theater's attempt to debut the King of Pop's cult-classic 1988 film 'Moonwalker,' which has never screened in the United States.

The film, which contained several short films/extended music videos for songs on MJ's album 'Bad,' including a 25-minute clip for 'Smooth Criminal,' screened theatrically in Europe and South America in 1988, but never received a theatrical screening in the U.S. for unknown reasons. 'Moonwalker' was released stateside on VHS in 1989, where it was both a commercial and critical success.

Hollywood's Arclight Cinema attempted to track down a print of the of 'Moonwalker,' which they planned to screen for one night only, however they were blocked by MJ's estate.

"We have bad news. It's not available," a rep for the Arclight explained. "We contacted the films directors and producers and were finally directed to MJ's estate attorney. They let us know the estate has the rights, but have no plans to make ... prints available for rent at this time.'"

The film was named after Michael's signature dance move, which inspired his equally enjoyable video game of the same name.

Ilyssa. See the comment to Keni above. Jackson had the economic resources to pay off and silence the families of those he molested, it does not make him any more innocent than OJ.

Keni. Yeah, OJ was never "proven" guilty, either, and yet only an extremely naive, foolish person could not recognize his guilt. Same with Jackson sleeping with little kids, the guy was a freak and a pervert. Obvious to any thinking person.

This article is not completely accurate. The film MOONWALKER has been seen here in the U.S.

The fact is that MOONWALKER was placed on video only. At the time of release there were only VHS videocassettes (Beta videocassettes had pretty much discontinued) and the film was only available in video sales & rental stores. It was not advertised widely as Michael Jackson's THRILLER and BAD albums. But nonetheless, MOONWALKER, from my recollection, was never intended for theater showing, but rather private home viewing only.

Unfortunately (and I'm still hoping and waiting for its conversion), MOONALKER has not been re-released in the format of DVD viewing. I rented it & saw it when available for rental only (as if only for promotional purposes) at the time of its video release. I wanted to buy it but no extra shipments were available at the time. And as I said, no reissue on DVD yet. It would be great if MJ's Estate would reissue this on DVD so we fans can have more to the memory of the late but great MICHAEL JACKSON!!

That would be disgustingLY, not disgusting. Please learn the difference between a verb and an adverb. And while you're at it, learn to use a shift key.

I know that I might be the least credible person on this topic considering I both love Michael Jackson and consider him innocent of the trials where he allegedly molested some 13 year old, but this is about a movie and his legacy and entertainment in general. Whatever you say, you can't deny that he's made contributions through philantrophy and is an iconic celebrity from this country who's art has never failed, who's endured a harsh and isolated childhood and has captured most of our hearts with his shy personality away from stage. His work and passion had created a new standard for pop music and choreography, and to this day, you can see many of his moves imitated by others. Justin Timberlake was particularily influenced by him. This article isn't imposing anything but a simple fact. There's no use of pathos or ethos anywhere, niether is there any hint of the writer persauding you to start a petition or anything. You're all just being vindictive, and that makes you the enabler of the watering down of society's so called "strides" in entertainment and our general lack of compassion for actually nice, good people who feel too scared or ostracized from the rest of society to even try to enter it and live a happy, normal life.
