Legend, who was running late for the event, told E!'s Ryan Seacrest that he found out about the wins via Twitter on the way to the awards show. When Legend and the Roots stopped by our offices back in September, Legend told The BoomBox that making the covers album turned out to be an unexpected learning experience. "I learned some songs I just didn't even know," he said. "One of the coolest things was just me learning more about the history of soul music, and some artists that have been overlooked, and some songs that have been overlooked, to some extent. And it was great really bringing those to life again; putting them out there for a new generation to hear. So I think that was one of the coolest things about doing this project."
Prior to this evening Legend had six Grammys under his belt, bringing his total up to nine, and the Roots only won once before, in 1999 for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group with Erykah Badu.
