Rihanna Sued by David LaChapelle for 'S&M' Video

Island Def Jam

The controversial video for Rihanna's 'S&M' single has been banned in approximately 11 countries and now the colorful, raunchy visuals are the target of a lawsuit from celebrity photographer David LaChapelle.

In the lawsuit, which was made public on Monday (Feb. 14), LaChapelle accuses Rihanna of ripping images from his popular photographs, which have appeared in publications such as Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair. LaChapelle claims that "the music video is directly derived from and substantially similar to the LaChapelle works," and has copied the "composition, total concept, feel, tone, mood, theme, colors, props, settings, decors, wardrobe and lighting" of his popular work.

LaChapelle cites eight specific instances in the video where he claims that his work can be seen, including one particular shot of Rihanna set against a blue background, showing a piece of candy in her mouth. Rihanna's camp has not issued a statement in response to the lawsuit as of yet. The pop star and photographer have also worked together in the past. LaChapelle's images of Rihanna can be seen on his website.

At Sunday night's (Feb. 13) Grammy Awards, the sultry songstress took the stage with Drake to perform the single 'What's My Name?' from her 'Loud' album, in addition to 'Love the Way You Lie' with Eminem.

Stupid, just like the rest of the society in which they allow you to sue someone for this guff. Unless Rihanna ran up on LaChapelle and permanently crippled him, then I do not see a reason to sue anyone. People have been borrowing and using the works of others for years, a wheel is still a wheel no matter what the material is you use. History repeats it's self look at clothing fashion, styles of old get reused in the modern age. IDIOTIC, DULL, and SENSELESS oh how much further must we fall?
