At the BET Awards nominations press conference earlier this week, Cole told Ms. Drama TV that he will release the album's first single within a few days. "We finally married a single and we picked it, so that's next week. There's no more holdup," J. Cole explained. "As of next week, you'll see me on full-fledged promo mode."
Declining to reveal the title of the song, Cole did give a few scarce details. "It's summertime, it's incredible," he said. "It samples one of my favorite albums from my growing up experience."
In April, feeling pressure from fans to give a release date for the long-delayed album, Cole addressed the issue. "I know my fans are frustrated with me, because I won't give a date," he said in an interview. "I only gave a date one time in my career last year, and I smacked myself in the face because it was so unrealistic. Now I say it's coming soon, and it's really true, because we're in the final stages right now."
The 26-year-old rapper is scheduled to join Rihanna for the North American dates on her Loud tour this summer, after completing a European tour with Drake earlier this year. His most recent release was the November mixtape 'Friday Night Lights,' which featured previously leaked singles, such as 'Blow Up.'
There is no date currently scheduled for J. Cole's album release.
