Help Celebrate 10 Years of Alicia Keys' 'Songs in A Minor'

Diana Levine for AOL

It's hard to believe it's been 10 years since Alicia Keys' incredible debut album, 'Songs in A Minor,' hit shelves, selling 50,000 copies on its first day of availability alone. The album went on to secure five Grammys and shift over 10 million copies worldwide, gaining platinum status in 10 different countries and securing recognition for the then 20-year-old native New Yorker on the international stage.

I actually had never heard of Alicia Keyes until about six years ago when I was in a store that sold used cd's. I found the "Songs in A MInor" album there, listened to it, and bought it.

This woman has talent BEYOND mere words. Not just musically, also as a wonderful, beautiful, woman doing the humanitiarian work all over the world that clearly touches her deeply, and who also has a quality of presence and a down to earth soul also beyond mere words, as well!

I listen to the SIAM album ALL the time. And each time I hear different things in each of her songs. ALL of the songs on this incredible album are favorites!

I have not been lucky enough to see her in concert, YET. Hopefully, soon I can.

Good luck on your marriage, being a mother, and please keep up the BEAUTIFUL work Alicia.

I was 16 years old when Songs in A Minor was released and now I'm almost 26 years old(next month, July 7th,lol) and the songs that still give me goosebumps are "Fallin", of course, Troubles, Goodbye, Never Felt this Way interlude, Butterflyz, and Caged Bird." 2001 was a very emotional time for me where I was trying to figure out who I was and what life was all about. "Troubles" spoke to my soul. I remember singing it one day in my room and bursting into tears because I felt what Alicia was saying and I knew that everything I was working for was not in vain. Butterflyz was so well written and beautiful(another tearjerker); I remember being impressed when Alicia revealed that the song was composed at 14. Amazing. Caged Bird definitely painted a picture of who I was at that moment. My external environment was caging me as well as my internal thoughts( doubt, fear, anger, etc.) and I needed to find my own way. Looking back I am proud to say that I am no longer in that place and I have "spreaded my wings and my song". Thank you Alicia for being that rare and beautiful bird, spreading your song with us.

Peace, love, and many blessings,

LOusley:-)

Butterflyz was the song that resonated with me the most. It was such a beautiful song; it made my own spirit soar above the terrible relationship I was in at the time. It gave me hope that one day I might be able to feel that way. A woman's worth brought me to tears, because it made me realise that I was selling myself short. I was a good, loving person in a relationship with someone who didn't appreciate me - he didn't see my worth, because I didn't see it either. It really helped me to look at myself in relationships.

I bought that album on my way home from work and I remember, putting it into the computer and putting the head phones on. I listened to every track and just lost myself in the music. The entire album was great - it explored so many sides of love. Mr. Man is another track I really loved. I mean how many times have we shared that kind of "what if?" moment when you connect with someone for just a moment.

Alicia Keys has phenomenal talent and I admire her strength in just being herself and not becoming another near naked gyrating sex symbol in a music video. She seems to be just real and I have never had the opportunity to see her in concert, live since she has never visited my country to perform, but I saw her sing with Mirriam Makeba in a World Aids Day concert on MTV. Wow! My two favourite artistes together. Two powerful women, two powerful voices coming together in in soul-stirring performance. Above all else, Alicia's apparent respect for Mirriam Makeba. Alicia Keys is a phenomenal woman.

My appologies. "If I Ain't Got You" is on her second album. Sorry. but it was my favorite. I always think that one is on the first one so just ignore that mistake :/ thats embarrassing.

1. The song that resonates with me most from that album is "If I Ain't Got You". that is still one of my most favorite songs by anyone. It reminds me how lucky i am to have that person in my life and reminds me to appreciate her all the time because she is the best thing that has ever happened to me and i would do anything for her. When i'm with her it's like nothing else matters because if i ain't got her everything means nothing. Also that song was playing when my girlfriend and I had our first kiss :) so it will always be a special song to us both.

2. I wish i had an Alicia Keys concert experience but i have not had the pleasure unfortunately. Ive seen her perform on TV and she is an incredible performer live. She is truly amazing and i can tell she really puts her heart and soul into everything she does with is one reason why i love her. She is so passionate about everything she does because she is an aquarius like me!

3. The first time i heard "If I Ain't Got You" I was 8 years old and i was in the car listening to the radio. I remember falling in love with the song because i was a lil romantic back then lol. I just remember thinking if i just had that one person in my life then i will be happy and that i would hold on to that person forever.

4. My favorite video from that album is the "Fallin" video because I can relate to being in a relationship where you are unsure of the future of it and there are a lot of problems that you are trying to work out and you're just not sure if it's worth it keep going because you are not happy, but you want desperately to make the other person happy. In the process of the you feel so alone because you feel like you are trying everything to make the relationship work but the other person makes it difficult. You know that you love them and you know they need you so you stick around for even longer. I think the video portrays that very well.

5. The things i love most about Alicia Keys are that she is really down to Earth still and it doesn't matter how famous she is or how many people love her she will still treat everyone with respect and love right back. She uses her money and fame to serve a purpose and help people(mostly children) that are in need in Africa. That to me is a great thing. I love that with her music even if i had never known what she looked like can make me fall in love with her through her lyrics and her voice. She is a truly amazing woman and all of these things are main reasons why she is my favorite and there are MANY more reasons but those ones stick out to me the most.

The first time i heard "fallin" i was doing the dishes. I remembered hearing this sensuous and melodious voice on the tv and i ran to see who was singing like that. i was so surprise to see this young gangster but elegant girl with such a smooth and sweet voice on my tv. It was at that point i said "awww" here is something new to had to my reggae, hip hop and R&B tasted.
In 2001 i saved all my lunch money because i knew i had to watch her performed at the annual reggae sumfest in montego bay Jamaica. I was not disappointed. when she sat at that piano it was like her fingers were singing the intro to her voice and when she opened her mouth and sang " I keep on fallin iiiiiiiinnnn in and out..." i melted as the crowded erupted with cheers.
I love the video "woman's worth" because i was trying a relationship at that time and when i listened the lyrics and saw the video i realized how worthy and powerful i was/am as a woman and if the other person couldn't see and respect that then he was not worthy for me.
AK has this heart warming mesmerizing awesome smile. If im sad or depress and she comes on the tv and smile its like i forgot what i was sad or depressed about. She seems genuine and down to earth, which most artistes are lacking in. She just seems like a sweet person with a great personality.
