"This one's for you and me living out our dreams/ We are right where we should be/ With my arms out wide, I open my eyes/ And all I want to see is a sky full of lighters," Mars helps out on the refrain. The 'Grenade' singer softens up the song and gives it similar dynamics to Rihanna's feature on Em's hit track, 'Love the Way You Lie.'
The song is an out-of-the ballpark move for the two rappers -- previous Bad Meets Evil tracks like the album's first single 'Fast Lane' and recent leak 'I'm on Everything' were grittier, with big bass beats and snappier delivery. But Royce da 5' 9" wins over on his verse, rap-singing about having his dad hang up his postal carrier uniform. He doesn't stop there, also giving a shout out to Em: "And I ain't gotta to stop the beat a minute, to tell Shady I love him/ The same the way he did Dr. Dre on 'The Chronic'/ Or tell him how real he is, or how I am or how I would kill for him, for him to know it."
With Lil Wayne releasing the bizarre slow jam 'How to Love' as his third 'Tha Carter IV' single, Jim Jones crooning about his 'Perfect Day' on his new solo album and now this 'Lighters' track from Bad Meets Evil, hip-hop is branching out into a soft-hop sub-genre, one that was never associated with the once-upon-a-time gun-slinging 'f--- the police' mentality. However, with this unexpected turn, the Bad Meets Evil album definitely demands attention and shows potential for being the surprise hit album of the year, or at least raises the bar for that joint-album from Kanye West and Jay-Z.
