The VH1 rock doc, 'Behind the Music: Mary J. Blige' aired on Sunday (July 24), offering viewers an inside glimpse at Mary's rise to fame and struggle to maintain it, with featured commentary from husband Kendu Isaacs, sister LaTonya Blige Dacosta and music industry vets and life-long friends Diddy, Nas, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
"I am the living proof that any person going through any tragic situation in their lives, anything terrible, you can get out," Mary explained in her inspiring special.
"The best thing you could do to me -- challenge me to challenge myself," Blige said of her battle with alcoholism, which she claims to have won for her husband's sake. "I stopped drinking. It was will power. It was prayer. It was really hard. But, I cared so much about [Isaacs], I didn't want to be just this alcoholic burden on him. He doesn't deserve for me to be some, you know, slum-bucket alcoholic, and so I took responsibility and I cleaned up, as much as I could. But it was hard."
Mary J. Blige's 10th studio album, 'My Life II: The Journey Continues,' is in stores on September 20.
