VP Records Executive Joel Chin Shot and Killed in Jamaica

The reggae community is mourning the loss of VP Records executive Joel Chin, who was shot and killed Tuesday night (Aug. 16) at his home in St. Andrew, Jamaica.

As part of the VP team, Chin, 35, served as the company's Director of A&R. He was an instrumental part in launching the careers of reggae acts such as Sean Paul, Sizzla, Wayne Wonder, TOK and Beenie Man, among others. The label exec was grandson of VP Records founder Vincent Chin, son of reggae producer Clive Chin and nephew of VP Records owners Chris and Randy Chin.

Chin joined the record label in the '90s, and helped craft reggae compilations 'Reggae Gold' and 'Strictly The Best.' His work with Sean Paul's 'Dutty Rock' LP brought a wealth of mainstream attention to VP, when the effort sold over seven million units worldwide.

More than just an A&R, he also shared his songwriting talents with the likes of Elephant Man, penning tracks for him, as well as being an accomplished producer.

Currently, an investigation into Chin's murder is underway. Details are scarce, other than Kingston police reporting that he was attacked after stepping out of his vehicle in his driveway. No known motive for the shooting has been revealed.

He is survived by his father, Clive, mother, Juliette, two brothers, three sisters and a newborn daughter.

So what do you get when you go to "so called" civilized countries such as the U.S. and the U.K., etc.? Last time I checked, they're killing people in those countries too. Have you ever been on the streets of Kansas City, KS or in bad part of Miami, NYC, DC to name a few? Why don't you check with law enforcement in these cities and more so you can get a pulse on the amount of crime that takes place on a daily basis. This isolated incident in JA doesn't make the island a bad place to be in comparison to some cities in America. Your ignorance is showing.

I agree nubyan. sometimes, you will found people out there who ego's make them think that they are better, thus make stupid comments. I've traveled and lived in Asia and Europe as well as the US. There's killing everywhere. Especially in the "so called" big major developed cities where the ego runs wild. Joel Chin was a sad tragedy.

This is such a tragedy but tourists should know that this happened in Kingston...not anywhere near Ocho Rios, Montego Bay, Negril and cruise ship ports where visitors usually travel. Kingston is a 5-6 hour drive by car from tourist areas. The fact that it happened in Kingston does not make this any less tragic; but tourists should not be afraid of traveling to Jamaica. Crimes against tourists are very rare. Saying you won't go to Jamaica becuase of violence in Kingston is like saying you won't go to Pennsylvania because somethng happened in Boston. Most Jamaicans are among the most peaceful, loving and gracious.

There is crime and violence every where, And the great nation of Jamaica is no different or exception. I love the country, and have spent a great deal of time there, and spent as much time in New York City, and i have witnessed more violence, and murder in new york than i have in my home town of Spanish Town

To think, I was seriously contemplating retiring in Jamaica by December!!!!! Hell no!! You all can have my spot out there. That is Iraqi in the Carribbean if you ask me. 2.5 million people and the police can't keep up. Amazing.

I don't think JA will miss you. Good luck on finding a spot anywhere that will provide you with a crime-free, danger-free, no drama-free existence. Let me know how it works out. Congrats on the retirement!

The aceptance of violence in some communities, has to be stopped. We are living in such a strange time, when young men are being killed for nothing. This man is another example of the lack of concern for human life.We must come together as a civilized society to educate our children that this is a intolerable way to live. The man wasn't even safe in his own driveway.
Wild West mentality,really stupid.

big-up all and especially the Yardi community. A sad day. May his soul rest in peace. One love. pls do not start with the slandering of the country. JA is beautiful place and to echo some of the other sentiments, crime can happen anywhere! I wouldn't down the back of south road in Queens at nite either! So pls!
