In the interview, the Brooklyn-born rapper, who bought a 1.7 percent stake in the team back in 2004, revealed that the Nets name has officially been changed, to reflect their new locale. "We have decided that the official name for the Nets will be the Brooklyn Nets," the 41-year-old 'Empire State of Mind' rapper proudly exclaimed, from the arena's construction site. "See I'm really giddy right now. Brooklyn Nets."
In celebration of the Brooklyn Nets' debut at the 18,000-seat Barclays Center, Jay also revealed that he will be performing as many as eight live shows, kicking off in Sept. 2012.
"I'm gonna open the building with a concert, with a couple of concerts actually -- one or two or eight," he continued. Although Fox News reporter Rosanna Scotto pressed Jay for further details about the dates and the team's colors, Jay was typically coy with his responses, refusing to give any further information.
Jay did, however, express the pride he felt about bringing new jobs to the borough. "Biggie had a line, 'Spread love, it's the Brooklyn way.' It's just how we feel, it's a deep love we have for our heroes. We walk around and we carry that," Jay explained. "It's already created so many jobs, especially at a time like this. We're gonna create more jobs, vendors ... I'm happy about that, along with all the entertainment and the basketball and boxing, 'cause it's gonna be more than about basketball. It's an entertainment arena. To create jobs on top of all that is a beautiful thing."
