Married couple Robin Thicke and Paula Patton are facing trouble with the IRS for an estimated $492,000 they owe in taxes.

On Dec. 28, 2011, the IRS filed a $492,583 tax lien against the 'Love After War' creator and his wife, who stars in the recently released film, 'Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.' The lien was filed with the Los Angeles County Recorder of Deeds, reports the Detroit News.

The address listed on the tax lien is a Post Office box in Santa Monica, Calif. According to the Detroit News, a representative for the couple says they had no clue a tax bill existed.

"They were just made aware of the issue and it is being taken care of immediately," the rep said Friday (Jan. 13).

Thicke, 34, has been married to Patton, 36, since 2005. They have a son, Julian, who will turn two years old this year.

It's wrong to assume they owe the IRS the full $492k. The IRS files tax liens in error all the time, and when they do, they automatically apply interest and penalty on top of what may or may not be owed. They may just be missing a filing. The right way to approach a tax lien:
1. Reconcile. Is the debt valid, and what is the real amount owed if any.
2. If there is a liability, and cannot pay in full immediately, the IRS has three options: Installment Agreement, Offer in Compromise, and Partial Payment Installment agreement depending on circumstances.
3. If you end using the installment agreement, penalty & interest will continue to accrue. Penalty is negotiable, interest is not. More on these options here:
