The 28-year-old took a page out of Lauryn Hill's book by showing up two hours late for her speedy set. Luckily, Fiona made up for her epic tardiness by putting on an energetic, powerful show. But the subject of her love life was an underlining theme that could have very well just been a way to introduce the music.
"I didn't know that I would be writing the actual story that would become my life," she told the crowd. "How did I become the 'Wrong Side'?" Fiona subsequently launched into 'Wrong Side of a Love Song,' a song featured on her new LP. In response to a fan yelling, "I love you," she said, "I'm glad somebody does," but despite issues in her personal life, she found an interesting medium of being both coy and candid with the crowd, even pulling an audience member on stage.
Fiona's music has always had an element of honesty, which is likely what connects with listeners and helped her earn two Grammy awards last month. One person who couldn't be more proud of her success is her label head, Steve Rifkin.
"I've been fortunate enough to work with a slew of great artists in my career and when I met Melanie, she had such a positive energy that lit up the room, that combined with her amazing voice, I knew there was so much potential with a talent such as hers," he tells The BoomBox. "I always said working with Melanie, she would be my first artist to get me a Grammy. As a female artist, we've really worked to build her core fan base of females across R&B, soul and mainstream from the ground up. Melanie's live performance is unmatched, so a lot of touring, touching her fans and allowing her music to really connect with the audience has been a major anchor for Melanie's project."
Up next, Fiona will perform on the Jay Leno Show Friday night (March 23) at 11:35PM. EST on NBC.
