Beastie Boys, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction: Adam 'MCA' Yauch 'Unable to Join' Bandmates

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame welcomed its third hip-hop act last night (April 14) in Cleveland, opening its doors to innovative New York City MCs the Beastie Boys. Unfortunately, the trio scrapped a planned performance, as only two members were on hand to accept the honor.

"Beastie Boys regret that Adam 'MCA' Yauch will be unable to join Mike 'Mike D' Diamond and Adam 'Ad-Rock' Horovitz at the band's induction into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame," read an official statement released hours before the event.

No word yet on what led to the no-show, though Yauch has kept a low profile since 2009, when news broke of his battle with cancer of the salivary gland.

"Mike, Adam and Adam are truly grateful for the honor but with only two of the three Beastie Boys attending, they will unfortunately not be able to perform at the ceremony," the statement continued.

In their acceptance speech, Mike D and Ad-Rock read a thank-you from their absent comrade, who told fans, "This induction is as much ours as it us yours."

Public Enemy leader Chuck D had the task of inducting the Beasties, and in his speech, he praised the group for breaking down boundaries and widening hip-hop's appeal.

"It broke the mold," he said. "The Beastie Boys are indeed three bad brothers who made history. They brought a whole new look to rap and hip-hop. They proved that rap could come from any street -- not just a few."

We lost one of the great ones today - May 4th 2012 will always now stand out in my mind. I pray for Adam Yauch's family and friends and thank him and his band not only for all of the music (which plays like a soundtrack of my life) but for everything he did to better the world we live in. Never bragging, never showing off, never saying "look at what I just did" when helping others; a true class act and creative genius. Today I feel like a small bit of myself has now come to an end.

This did not just happend??? Hip Hop just lost another legend. MCA of the Bestie Boys has passed away. As a huge fan, I can say their will never be another rap group like the Beastie. NO ONE and I mean NO ONE could touch their concerts. You could tell that the group had a serious love and respect for the music. I'm going to miss them
