Ice Cube 'Straight Outta Compton' Film: Rapper Explains His Role in New Project

On Thursday (June 28), Ice Cube and DJ Drama touched down in Atlanta to continue their search for Coors Light's Coldest MC. Before the competition kicked off at Reign nightclub, Cube spoke to The BoomBox about the role he's accepted in the production of "Straight Outta Compton," a film based on his legendary rap group N.W.A.

"I'm full-in. I'm producing it along with a few other people," he reveals. "We got [F.] Gary Gray to direct it and it's cool because he does good work. We don't have to teach him what N.W.A. is about; he lived it."

The production team is on their third round of casting drafts and they continue to work on getting the script tighter. Cube emphasizes that authenticity is key in the making of the film.

"I'm excited," he enthused. "A lot of it is about the pre-production of the movie since it's a period film. Even though it's just the '80s, you gotta make sure that we have the flavor. But it's full steam ahead."

As far as who will play the part of Cube, he's looking for someone near to his heart. "I want my son to play me," the MC states. "I'ma give him a shot, see what he can do."

Later in the evening, Cube and Drama went on to co-host the semi-finals for the nation's Coldest MC. The competitors, Lois LS Lane and Jay R Da Star, performed their best freestyles and original tracks for the southern audience in hopes of making it to the final round in New York City.

"We wanna see what somebody can do with a 16 or in 30 seconds, but we also wanna see if they got a song or a show," Cube shares. "Do they have stage presence? We're looking for people who know they're a star before we even see them."

Hometown rapper 2 Chainz couldn't make his scheduled appearance but T.I. effortlessly filled his spot performing crowd favorites like "Bring 'Em Out" and his guest verses from "N----s in Paris" and "Spend It."

A$AP Rocky immediately graced the stage just after the Atlanta veteran, spitting a verse from his internet smash, "Peso," and reality TV newcomer Lil Scrappy followed up with his very first hit, "Headbussa."

After announcing Lois LS Lane to be the night's winner, Ice Cube delved into his own catalog, performing a number of hits including "It Was a Good Day."
