In the song, Nas laments his lack of love, as the singer is recently divorced from his wife of five years, Kelis. The couple were married in 2005, and divorced in 2010. Life is Good reflects a lot on the disintegration of their relationship, and "Cherry Wine" contains hints of Nas' annoyance with his former wife, or other jealous women.
Issues of money, jealousy and gold-digging aside, the Queens, N.Y., native raps about how he wants someone who will be there for him even at rock bottom. The call and response between the Illmatic rapper and Amy Winehouse's refrain, "Where is he the man that is just like me," work together flawlessly to convey the longing and sadness infused in this song that is only surreptitiously about an alcoholic drink.
