Common to Release 'Invincible Summer' in July

Chi-Town emcee Common is gearing up for the release of his eighth studio album, 'Invincible Summer,' which is due this July. "I created this music for the summer time, it's about feeling good," Common said when explaining the inspiration for his upcoming album. "This is the type of music I felt was missing from my body of work."

Straying from the neo-soul meets old school hip hop flow, 'Invincible Summer' is leaning toward an electro-rap sound (think Gnarls Barkley) thanks to production by the Neptunes and Mr. DJ, and guests Cee-Lo and pop group Chester French. The rapper is also waiting on a verse from indie-scene singer/rapper Santogold. The album's expected first single, 'Universal Mind Control (U.M.C.)' is due to hit radio in the coming weeks.

Common Launches 'A Minute' Lyric Contest

Chicago emcee Common and his Common Ground Foundation are teaming up with the Kaiser Family and MTV to encourage youth to get tested for HIV with the 'A Minute' lyric contest.

Participants must submit an original lyric that expresses why they think it's important to get tested. Contestants can submit entries -- which must be a minute or less -- at www.aminutecontest.com. Common will perform the lucky winner's lyric in a public service announcement, airing on MTV2 and MTVu. The PSA will premiere on National HIV Testing Day (June 27).

Common Reveals Title to Upcoming Album

In a recent video posted on You Tube, Common reveals that he's already started "mentally" working on his new album, dubbed 'The Believer.' "It's up to ya'll to decide if it's better than this album or that album, but I'm going to say it's going to be one of my best albums ever," the rapper proudly claims in the video diary. The Chi-town emcee also discusses his many side projects, including upcoming children's books.

Common Confirms Green Lantern Rumors

Chi-town's hip-hop hero Common has confirmed that he'll play the role of the Green Lantern in the upcoming 'Justice League of America' film. There's just one problem ... the film's progress has been stalled due to the ongoing writers strike.

"It's a blessing really, to know that I could potentially be this superhero," Common told MTV. "Justice League itself is an honor, and Green Lantern is an incredible character to play. It's a blessing to be associated with it."

While the film waits for the green light, Common is already set to appear in this summer's action/adventure movie, 'Wanted,' alongside James McAvoy, Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman, and he's been linked to the upcoming Keanu Reeves drama, 'The Night Watchman.'

Common Rumored to Play Green Lantern

Chi-town rapper Common is building quite a resume lately. After appearing in two flicks in 2007 -- 'Smokin' Aces' and 'American Gangster' -- Common will reportedly play the Green Lantern in the comic-book inspired film, 'Justice League of America.'

Whether the rumors or true or not, Common has officially crossed over into the acting world. The rapper is already set to appear in this summer's action/adventure movie, 'Wanted,' alongside James McAvoy, Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman, and he's been linked to the upcoming Keanu Reeves drama, 'The Night Watchman.'

Linkin Park, Common Lead Sunset Strip Block Party

A little into their set at the intimate Key Club, Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda gave the understatement of the night when he said, "I guess we should thank the folks at SanDisk for putting this on." The data storage company celebrated their newest foray into music by taking over three venerable Sunset Strip hotspots -- the Key Club, Roxy and Viper Room -- for one of the most ambitious parties L.A. has seen in some time.

After earlier sets by the Crystal Method and Cut Chemist, LP returned to their L.A. roots, playing the Key Club for the first time in what they estimated to be eight years. The rockers ran through an hour-long performance featuring a bevy of hits from 'In the End,' 'Crawling' and a beautiful rendition of 'Pushing Me Away,' that featured Mike Shinoda on keyboards accompanying a cast-wearing Chester Bennington, who broke his arm recently in Australia.

Following their set, the assembled press and VIPs filed down the street to the Roxy for an energetic after midnight set by Common that paid tribute to old-school hip-hop, with name-checks from Snoop to Dre.
