New Releases: Foxy Brown Returns With 'Brooklyn's Don Diva,' Cherish Tell 'The Truth'

Foxy Brown aka 'Brooklyn's Don Diva' is back after a seven year musical hiatus and eight months in the slammer. The rapper picks up where she left off on her new album, which hits stores today, except this time Foxy has some street cred. The emcee relies heavily on her Trinidadian roots and delivers an album that sounds like a reggae-hip-hop mashup. The danceable track 'When the Lights Go Out' saves the rapper from falling in the classic hip-hop trap, which is when an artist releases a LP without a single radio-friendly hit.

On the other end of the spectrum, R&B group Cherish return with their sophomore release, 'The Truth.' The singing sisters croon about heartache, cute guys and being 'framed out' over hot beats. The Atlanta-bred foursome get a little help from a fellow A-town artist when Yung Joc joins them on their successful single 'Killa.'

Other notable releases include Lil Scrappy's 'Prince of the South.'

Foxy Brown Released From Prison

After serving eight months at New York's Rikers Island correctional facility, rap diva Foxy Brown is a free bird. The rapper -- who was sentenced to one year in jail for violating probation when she pled guilty to misdemeanor assault charges -- was released from prison this morning.

The rapper was greeted by excited fans and media as she stepped out of a white Rolls Royce donning a head scarf, diva-like sunglasses and a brown leather jacket over a fairly simple ensemble. Brown hugged and took pictures with almost every friend, fan and family member while making quick statements into a bevy of tape recorders and cameras before jumping back into the Rolls Royce.

Foxy Brown to be Released From Prison Friday

Looks like Foxy Brown will be released from the foxhole this week. After serving eight months at the Rose M. Singer facility in New York's Rikers Island, the rap diva will be a free bird on Friday, according to her manager Chaz Williams.

"She did every single minute of her bid in jail, and she did it under the most severe conditions," Williams told Billboard. "They had her on continuous lockdown just because she is a celebrity. They were trying to break her spirit."

They may have tried to break Foxy's spirit, but the rapper, whose real name is Inga Marchand, is preparing a major comeback. There's been rumors of a reality series and plans to release her much-delayed album, 'Brooklyn Don Diva,' which is due May 13.

Foxy Brown's Travel Request Denied

Troubled rapper Foxy Brown won't be receiving treatment for her hearing condition anywhere other than New York's Rikers Island correctional facility. Judge Melissa Jackson denied the jailed rapper's request to travel to to the House Clinic in Los Angeles to repair a defective cochlear implant.

Brown, whose real name is Inga Marchand, complained of an ear condition in 2004, and experienced some loss of hearing in 2006.

Prosecutors argued that Marchand would receive the necessary treatment in New York, but her lawyers insisted their client needed the House Clinics' specialists.

Marchand was sentenced in September 2007 to a year in jail for violating probation when she pled guilty to misdemeanor assault charges stemming from an altercation with two manicurists in August 2004. Read the full story.

Foxy Brown Gets Emotional on Leaked 'Star Cry'

Embattled rap star Foxy Brown can be heard delivering emotionally heavy lyrics on the leaked track 'Star Cry.' The former hip-hop heavyweight's career has been marred by legal trouble and the rapper put it all on wax. "Lord have mercy/I'm so controversy/Bet you never seen a star cry/I gave you my life/You get my blood, sweat and tears/Hip-hop's bad girl for 10 f---ing years," Brown spits on the chorus.

According to sources close to the rapper, Brown recorded 'Star Cry' before serving a one year sentence at New York's Rikers Island Correctional Facility for violating probation when she pled guilty to to misdemeanor assault charges stemming from an altercation with two manicurists in August 2004. The incarcerated emcee is set to release 'Brooklyn's Don Diva' -- her first new album in almost seven years -- in February.

Foxy Brown Asks For Early Release From Jail

Embattled rapper Foxy Brown is requesting that she be released from jail after serving only four months of a one-year sentence. Brown, whose real name is Ingrid Marchand, is asking to be released so she can travel to the House Clinic in Los Angeles for hearing tests. Marchand complained of an ear condition in 2004, and experienced some loss of hearing in 2006.

"I ask you to please take into consideration that my health is in jeopardy," Marchand wrote in a handwritten letter attached to court papers. "Yes, I've made some bad choices and stupid mistakes," she continued in the four-page letter. "But please understand that sitting in a prison with murderers and criminals is not rehabilitating or what I need to deal with my inner issues."

Marchand's attorney Laura Dilimentin claims that the rapper's condition is "worsening in jail since she cannot obtain at Rikers the proper treatment." According to Dilimentin, Marchand needs cochlear implant adjustments in order to repair her "deteriorating hearing loss."

Marchand was sentenced in September 2007 to a year in jail for violating probation when she pled guilty to to misdemeanor assault charges stemming from an altercation with two manicurists in August 2004.

Foxy Brown Released From Solitary Confinement

After spending 40 of her appointed 76 days in "punitive segregation," Foxy Brown is free at last ... sort of. The rapper, whose real name is Inga Marchand, was released from solitary confinement at the Rose M. Singer Center for women on New York's Rikers Island due to good behavior, according to TMZ.com.

Marchand, who has been on Riker's Island since August for violating probation, was placed in solitary confinement after refusing to submit to a drug test, allegedly attacking another inmate and verbally assaulting prison officials.

The rapper's legal woes, which led to her one year prison sentence, began when she pled guilty to to misdemeanor assault charges stemming from an altercation with two manicurists in August 2004. The rapper continued her run of bad behavior and was arrested in February 2007, after allegedly throwing a bottle of hair glue at an employee in a Florida beauty salon. Her legal trobles continued when she was indicted on assault charges in August 2007, for allegedly throwing her cell phone at her neighbor in Brooklyn.

Foxy Brown Launches FreeFoxyBrown.com from Jail

Foxy Brown announced Thursday that she's launched a new official web site, FreeFoxyBrown.com, in order to keep in contact with her fans while she serves her time in the slammer. The incarcerated rapper was sentenced to one year in jail in September for violating probation. Brown, whose real name is Ingrid Marchand, was on probation after pleading guilty to misdemeanor assault charges stemming from an altercation with two manicurists in August 2004. The rapper continued her run of bad behavior and was arrested in February 2007 after allegedly throwing a bottle of hair glue at an employee in a Florida beauty salon. She was indicted on assault charges in August 2007 for allegedly throwing her cell phone at her neighbor in Brooklyn.

Despite her legal woes -- and rumors that she was three months pregnant at the time of her hearing -- Brown has been in relatively good spirits. "This is just a temporary situation," Brown said following her sentencing. "I made my bed and have no problem lying in it. My will is steady. What doesn't kill me will only make me stronger. I think there are greater injustices in that require our immediate attention, like what's going on in Jena, Louisiana. I will not surrender, I'm fine, free Jena Six!"

FreeFoxyBrown.com clears up recent rumors that the former rap star had reached rock bottom and was dating a pimp via new tracks off her upcoming album, 'Brooklyn's Don Diva.' The first single, 'We Don't Surrender' featuring Queens underground MC, Grafh, is available now on iTunes.

Foxy Brown Goes to Jail After Probation Violation

Foxy Brown -- real name: Inga Marchand -- was as sent to jail Wednesday morning by a Manhattan judge after violating the terms of her probation. The 27-year-old rapper will remain in jail until her next hearing, which is scheduled for Sept. 7 in New York.

The violation stems from two incidents: Brown's recent arrest for allegedly assaulting her neighbor with a Blackberry and leaving New York jurisdiction without permission.

If you're one for heresay, Brown's incarceration couldn't come at a more inopportune time. According to a New York Post columnist, she told customers in a Bed Bath & Beyond earlier this month that she was "getting married" and "pregnant."
