Remy Ma Sentenced to Eight Years in Prison

Remy Ma was sentenced to eight years in prison for shooting her longtime friend Makeda Barnes-Joseph in the stomach for allegedly lifting $3,000 from her purse. The 26-year-old rapper was found guilty of first-degree assault, criminal weapons charges and attempted coercion on March 27.

"I stand here today as Remy Mackie," she said before the judge read the sentence. "I'm a loving wife, mother and loving daughter and loving sister to my brothers and sisters." Remy wept as she apologized to Barnes-Joseph, but the judge did not sympathize with the rap diva.

"This is somewhat of a pattern. This is not the first time she has been engaged in a violent act. She never took responsibility for her actions,"the judge said. "This has nothing to do with rap it's about the actions of one person. Remy is an extremely angry young woman who feels the rules do not apply to her."

Remy Ma Admits She Shot Friend But Insists It Was an Accident

Remy Ma's attorney disclosed in closing arguments Monday that his client did in fact shoot her longtime friend Makeda Barnes-Joseph, but claimed that it was an accident.

Defense attorney Ivan Fisher claimed Remy Ma, whose real name is Remy Smith, got into her friend's car after a party at a New York nightclub and asked Barnes-Joseph -- whom Smith had accused of stealing $3,000 from her purse -- to dump the contents of her bag. Barnes-Joseph refused and a struggle for the purse ensued, resulting in Smith's gun going off. Barnes-Joseph was shot in the stomach and hospitalized for three weeks after the shooting.

"There is no other explanation for why Remy Smith would have chosen that unique moment in time to shoot her," Fisher told the court.

Prosecutors claimed the shooting was anything but an accident. "She took every step you had to take to shoot somebody," Assistant District Attorney Michael McIntosh told jurors. "Ms. Smith took an illegal .45-caliber automatic and loaded it with hollow-point bullets and got into Ms. Joseph's car." McIntosh added that Smith ran after the incident instead of getting her former friend medical attention.

Jury deliberation will begin today. The rapper could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted.

Remy Ma's legal woes have followed her into the new year. The rapper, who was charged with shooting her longtime friend, Makeda Barnes-Joseph, in the stomach for allegedly lifting $2,000 from her purse, was slapped with a $80 million lawsuit on Wednesday. The suit, which names the Remy Ma's former record label Universal Music Group and Sure Shot Recordings, claims the companies encouraged her violent behavior.

"Only by pursuing those who we believe are legally responsible for this vicious and callous act of violence, can we hope to put an end to this senseless cycle of violence that is glorified by Hip-Hop marketing," Barnes-Joseph's attorney, Lauren P. Raysor, said in a statement.

The rapper, whose real name is Reminisce Smith, and her team of lawyers claim Barnes-Joseph is simply an opportunist. "It strikes me that this is part of a publicity stunt," Smith's attorney Ivan Fischer told the Village Voice. "The claims she makes are inaccurate. She reaches into every conceivable deep pocket-people and institutions that have no more responsibility for what happened than the village voice. It's grossly irresponsible
